The wear patterns on those wood pieces just don't say plate or platters to me as I would think the plate would slide and not stay propped up the way you would want... hum....
It's almost like maybe the two pieces were set up side by side and then a board or something was set across them, maybe?
OR glass, set in in the middle of the table to place a center piece for side dish/condiments, etc? No the book bit has to be it.

Here is one booster seats for toddlers the marks are from a belt to strap seat in place to a chair.
