Hey guys, I was reading this board and got to thinking of making a usb passthru, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to open up one of my dead ego batts. I got 2 of them that were DOA and Im looking for guidance. I have a dremel, but thats about all the tools I have (except for engineering tools like soldering irons and parts) and I pretty much suck at using the dremel.
Any help would be appreciated. im thinking of making it so that it has a big capacitor that can charge so that it doesnt pull too much from the 5v supply and burn out my iphone charger or computer. Also, im thinking of having a 5V/3.7V selector so that I can use my LR atties (which are the only ones I really use) in it until I get some other ones. Thanks!

If they were DOA why wouldn't your supplier replace them?

I agree with WillyB but... I took one apart using a tubing cutter just below the switch. The tube is pretty soft and crimped around the top of the battery. There is only about 3/8" between the top of the metel tube and the top of the bat. a better optoin may be to use the dremel to carefully cut lengthwise down the side of the tube about 1/8" from the switch holder and wiggle the tube untill it brakes free.

Don't cut it lol. Assemble the ego with carto and cone. Grab it firmly top and bottom, at either end and pull it apart wiggling it forcefully like you're trying to snap it in half. The button connector will slide out of the battery tube from where it's pressed in. When it finally gives way, you will most likely snap one of the battery leads! i tried using the button circuit assembly from one-each of my eGos and Rivas for a flashlight mod. I destroyed them in the process of attempting to solder leads to the microproccessor. Good luck with your attempts!

And why would you want to do this anyway? With these eGo looking things it's the electronics that fail, not the cell itself. The beauty of a well built flashlight mod (with only an appropriate and decent switch) is it's ability to outlast many cells and provide higher initial loaded volts.

It was a hair-brained idea to tide me over until my supplies came from DX and Digikey lol. Those circuits are tiny! }8O.
