hello all

I've been smoking for years and recently tried switching to the ecig using Blue disposable, these work ok but are not cost effective....had some issues with blu rechargeable and have now decided to build my own. I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by starting my first post asking this but have spent the past couple days searching in my spare time and couldn't find an answer that made sense to me o_O.

I wanna build a simple box mod, similar to the "puck" using 4 AAA NiMh batteries, and a 510 tankomizer.

My question is: if I purchase a 510 Tankmizer and the 510 battery connector along with a battery box and momentary switch of some sort, is this all I need to get started? I guess I'm confused because I've seen so many different mods and they all seem to make them look more complicated then they really are. It's also baffling to me that I can build a much better system for ~ $15 than if I were to spend $50+ on a premade system from a distributor...

I'm looking at madvapes.com:
  • Dual Coil 510 Tank Cartomizer $7.99 and
  • Prewired 510 Battery Connector $2.99

My reason for choosing 510 is I still have a few blu carts available and have read numerous places that they fit into the 510, I also like the idea of being able to go buy a 5 pack of blue carts for $10 and be able to use them on my box whilst waiting for delivery of eJuice purchased online. Going with AAA because of what I've read from the puck guy about safety, rechargeability, and being able to buy batteries from walmart as opposed to having to purchase from specialty store.

Thanks for everything!

I guess my main question was regarding the power source and 510. The dual coil tankomizer I'm looking at is 1.6 ohm which, according to madvapes(Recommended Resistances / Mad Vapes Blog) is perfect for 3.7 volts. AA and AAA batteries are ~1.25V, so in theory 3 AAA batteries in series should be perfect as they would add up to ~3.75V. The puck mod uses a 901 atomizer and 4 AA batteries, adding up to ~ 5V. Since 901's are 2-2.5 ohm which, according to the same madvapes chart, "may not work and will tend to burn e-liquid or blow out the atomizer or cartomizer." So this is what I'm trying to avoid...

I'll keep searching to find a definite answer, just looking to confirm 3xAAA NiMh will work with 1.6 ohm 510 dual coil atomizer.

Thanks

One more question I came up with...any reason I couldn't wire a 510 atomizer directly into the 5V and ground wires of a usb cable or cigarette-lighter usb car adapter? Like a usb passthrough mod, but without the battery. I would like to be able to vape at will while in my car, and don't see any reason to have a battery involved if it's always hooked up in the car, with a push button to use while vaping. This seems like such a simple mod, but I've searched for the last hour and didn't get anywhere. It also seems priceless to have a car cigarette lighter used to power an electronic cigarette :)

check out a video on you tube called making a usb pass through. it is so easy to make all you need is a usb cable, housing of your choice, 510 connector , switch, and hot glue or epoxy and soldering set up. a 510 conector and a switch at madvapes.com cost a couple of dollars. i used a small plastic flashlight and i plug it into a cell phone car charger. i love this with a 3 ohm carto in a tank. always have a great vape in the car.

I got my tankomizer, battery connector, and eLiquid from madvapes today only 2 days after ordering, phenomenal. I got right into modding as soon as I got it, here are pics of the temporary mods I rigged up right away...

here's my first "mod", just testing with 3 AA batteries:

that worked great so I hooked it up to this 3xAAA battery holder I ripped out of a 'dollar store' flashlight, I'm sure I'll be using this holder and maybe the flashlight tube in a more permanent mod soon:

Fantastic. I have so many more ideas on cheap and simple mods; gotta go buy a buncha rechargeable NiMh's soon. I can taste a hint of burning from the 4.5 volts, I'm probably gonna switch to a 3 ohm carto next.

This is cool reading if you're preferring a mod, but if you're a Blu user but tired of the endless dead carts, jcsmoke.com makes a refillable carto system where the batts are pass-thru and that's the company that makes Blu's juices. The Vea from them is my first non-disposable eCig and I'm loving it. Juices are of course awesome and the batts go 2-2 1/2 days between charges.YMMV but I'm really glad I put my money into my Vea--I want to work on DIY juices before I try getting into modding except for a mod I really want to try so the Vea is money well spent.

I do like some of the blu liquids, especially cherry, which is why I decided on the 510 connector because it works on the blu cartridges...but since I've only tried a couple different brands I'm hoping I can find a flavor I like even better, and for cheaper.

After browsing jcsmoke.com I see they have a black cherry liquid $20 for 30ml, not bad...def gonna give that a try; thanks!

My first few quick mods worked great, so I decided to go ahead and stick it all in a box, started with an altoid tin:

After playing around with the multimeter decided to upgrade to 4xAAA, copied the Puck Mod, but stuck it all into a 4XAA battery holder instead of 2XAAA holders to save room:

the final product:

This thing is awesome, so much better than blu disposable or rechargeable. Total cost to build the finished product was $15. I'll be getting rechargeable AAA's soon; I also have a direct usb model in the works for vaping at my desk and in the car.

Here's a couple more quick mods I threw together for direct usb power.

This one is in the dollar store flashlight where I got the previously used 3xAAA battery holder, not bad, very flimsy:

After my success with the last mod, I just finished this one. Also a direct usb mod, this time I stuck it inside a chapstick tube. I plan on keeping the cap handy for keeping dirt out of the battery connector when not in use:

I love the direct usb mods, no more batteries, it works great at home, work, and in the car. So far the only issue I've had is having to hold the button down for about 5 seconds before it starts to work when connected to my laptop when it's on battery power; not a big deal. I can also carry around a iPhone usb charger when I'm going to a friend's house to plug it in...I'll probably build a usb charger type battery case inside my altoids tins using 8XAA batteries for other occasions where a plug isn't handy. I should be able to keep the tin in my pocket while vaping which, I'm sure, will raise some eyebrows

My usb mods are getting a bit fidgety...sometimes I hold the button for a good 10 seconds and nothing happens at all. I'm wondering if there's something in the usb port/usb charger causing an issue or if I have a short in both mods?

I've found that sometimes I need to press the button, release it, the press and hold and it works fine from then on. Not sure if there's some kinda voltage regulation going on from the usb port causing this.
