Hello everyone - been reading the forum non stop since Saturday (which was the day I stopped smoking and started vaping!).

I went to B&M here in Scotland and got a starter kit which was pretty cheap and nasty, it had an ego-t type clone battery and a really cheap top coil clearomizer with 2 hanging wicks. After about a day using it I started getting dry hits, hardly any vapour, burning lungs and it started leaking - so wasn't really enjoying the experience.

After reading the forum I knew that I had to invest some cash, so I bought a kanger 2 mini tank, T3 clearomizer and some different juices from realvapes.co.uk which arrived yesterday and have so far been very impressed with the mini tank 2. So I went and ordered a innokin vv/vw v3 battery, an iclear 30s, and some more juices from vapeescape.co.uk which have just arrived and i'll experiment with tonight.

I've got a few questions which am hoping someone will answer (I've not been able to find the answers easily):

  • Why are battery units referred to as mods? are these different things?
  • I've seen people rave about these provari batteries/mods - whats so great about them above the innokin vv/vw v3 I've ordered - both seem to do the same thing as far as I can tell? fair enough the provari looks better but at nearly 5x the price?
  • I seen people complain about heads making gurgling noises -is this a different noise as all the heads I've tried make a very very small gurgling noise, but they vape fine?
  • Whats the term attys short for? is this just another term for the head?
  • How will I know when the coil in the head for the mini tank 2 is done or needs cleaned?

I think that's all for now - apologies for the long first post and questions!

ps - sorry if I have any terminology wrong - still learning!

Cheers,
Frasbo

Welcome to ECF !!!!

originally before mass produced units were available, people would "modify" (mod) flashlites, hand held lasers, etc to make a useable battery tube.

Provari pretty much the Mercedes of the Battery tube units

Gurgling is a term for the noise/condition of the tank/coil assembly when too much fluid is in the air column kinda like when drinking with a straw when the cup is nearly empty.

atty is short for atomizer ( the tank/coil assembly)

you will notice either a diminished flavor and vapor density occuring... then comes the dreaded dry hit (no more juice and an unpleasent burned taste) if you get the burned taste, its time to change the coil..

Why are battery units referred to as mods? are these different things?
Basically a "mod" is an Advanced Personal Vaporizer. Anything more "advanced" than an eGo battery fits this category.

ADVANCING UP THE VAPING LADDER WITH EGO'S AND MODS

I've seen people rave about these provari batteries/mods - whats so great about them above the innokin vv/vw v3 I've ordered - both seem to do the same thing as far as I can tell? fair enough the provari looks better but at nearly 5x the price?
The Provari is a high end mod. It is USA made and manufactured (hence higher production costs). Higher quality parts and attention to detail. Built like a tank so is extremely durable. Top notch customer service and the ability to have the Provari repaired for as long as you own one. The Chinese-made mods are of lower quality parts, do not have customer service nor have the ability to have them repaired - you will need to purchase another mod should it fail or break. There are many high end mods like the Provari (including the Reo bottom feeder) which can command a much higher price, even when sold used in the classifieds.

Whats the term attys short for? is this just another term for the head?
Atomizer(s). This is the heating element or coil in a juice attachment. It can also mean a drip atomizer (another type of juice attachment) or a RBA (rebuildable atomizer). So depending upon the context of the subject matter, it can mean different things.

IS IT A CARTO, A TANK, OR WHAT? A GUIDE TO JUICE ATTACHMENTS

How will I know when the coil in the head for the mini tank 2 is done or needs cleaned?
The head/wick units will last 2 - 3 weeks on average and then need to be replaced. Vapor production will diminish, flavors will become muted or taste burnt, or the unit will just stop working.

1: Don't pin me this, but I think the term came from modded flashlight tubes that people started using to power their vapes.

2: A provari has excellent built quality, is serviceable and provides one of the best voltage regulations in the market. A provari provides a near-DC voltage while your innokin for example uses a fast-switching on-off voltage supply to achieve the same effect of a variable voltage. This makes the provari a smoother and arguably more enjoyable vape.

3: Gurgling happens when juice builds up around the coil and gets in the air-path. This can happen from time to time with any bottom coil clearomizer, especially if I leave it in my pocket. If it's doing it constantly and you're actually getting juice in your mouth you should look for a way to fix it.

4: atty is short for atomizer, an atomizer is usually referred to as something holding wick and wire. (a coil head)

5: You can tell by a sharp drop in performance. It heats up slower, produces less vapor, etc.

Your Innokin is a great box mod. Your other questions have been answered well by others.

There are tube mods, variable voltage mods, variable wattage mods, and box mods. As others said, it all comes from the evolution of the early days when all ecigs were similar to the size of a cigarette, but the batteries didn't provide enough vaping time. So, people started making various modifications (mods) and we ended up with new battery sizes and the boxes and tubes to accommodate them. Then came the electronic advancements that gave us VV/VW and all sorts of atomizer variations.

Atomizer comes from the process of vaporizing a liquid into a fog. The perfume atomizer came first and the name was adopted. Ecigs use heat instead of air nozzles to produce the fog (atomized liquid).

Thanks again for all the responses people.

Am really happy to have discovered vaping, I kind of knew about it, but just ignored it and thought it wasn't for me. I'm a geek at heart and I truly love the nature of all the different mods and components you can buy and try out - so as well as being a nicotine replacement to help me quit, I also feel like I've found myself a new hobby (much to the dismay of my wallet/gf).

Although I do feel like there is a catch somewhere... lol

Another point is the size difference. The iTaste VV3 you just ordered is a very small mod. It will be very similar in size to your ego battery. The Provari and many others are very heavy--even heavier than a similarly sized flashlight/torch due to the metal and battery size. The battery in your iTaste VV3 is 800 mah and is enclosed in a plastic sleeve. The regular size Provari uses a 18650 battery which is 2600 mah. A very rough rule of thumb is 100 mah per hour.

Don't worry it will become a hobby and the catch is you will probably start drooling over new gear to buy. In terms of health it's as good as it looks that case studies keep on confirming.

Frasbo, I must say, you are going to just love the IClear 30s! But when you fill it, keep it below the 3ml "max" line (below 3/4 full). If you fill it over that, it will flood, and you will be drinking your juice, instead of vaping it! The top cap on mine was hard to take off initially, but with a little persistence, and a microfiber towel, I got it off!
