Hi All,

Newbie vaper here been about a month and really loving it and getting right in to all the gadgets. Currently using vision spinner with Kanger t3s tops, quite like the vape, I am building my own coils and wicking with cotton, nice and easy.

I want to move up to the next level, been looking at VW APV's like the VAMO, Evic etc, and getting a Kayfun lite but what is bugging me is the size of them all unless you go for a small battery which the way I am vaping at the moment would probably last me an hour. I don't like the box mods I prefer a tubular design and of course battery life is essential.

So at the moment it looks like 18650 batteries and a device that is about 130+ mm high before I add the Kayfun which I think is going to be too tall for my liking. I have seen a few mods using a 26650 battery and a vamo controller head but again that is still too tall.

So what options do I have, I was thinking are their any controller heads from an APV that are not too big that could fit a tube that holds a 26650 battery but doesn't make the overall height any larger than about 90 - 100 mm high so when I put a large Kayfun on top I am not walking around with a light saber if I am out and about.

All thoughts and comments greatly appreciated for this newbie.

Cheers

Unfortunately for you, tube mods are going to be quite long in length, especially with an 18650 battery. You are going to have to make some consessions at some point along the way in your decision on which mod you end up buying.

Should you decide to go with an 18350 battery, a Segelei ZMax Mini or Provari Mini might suit your needs, but you may need to carry a spare battery or two with you for all day use. However, using an 18350 battery keeps these tube mods to a pocket-friendly length. Why Provari?

Generally speaking, box mods using an 18650 are going to be short in length (height).

When you get into 26650 mods you aren't talking big, you're talking HUGE. Add a VW control head and a KayFun and it becomes a real monster of a device. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. IMO they would work better if they put wheels on them.

I prefer a smaller PV, and the 18490/500 is my battery size of choice. The Evolv Kick-2 is my VW control device of choice.
A Nemesis mechanical mod with a Kick-2, and a 18500 battery is 95mm long. With a power range of from 5 to 15 watts, it meets the needs of anyone except the wild cloud chasers.

As you can see, my KayFun 3.1 is almost as long as my Nemesis (10mm shorter)

All of these PVs have the same 18490/500 batteries in them.

I know you said no box mods... But I think you should reconsider.
At first I was against them, but I've found that they are much more pocket friendly, and stealthy in the hand. The vaporsharks ar the pretty tiny. I've got a pretty hana clone that's a reasonable size, and I think segeli is putting out a 30w+ device that's a smaller boxed.
I got a Smoktech SiD as my first upgrade from an ego. With tube mods not only are they pretty big in 18650 mode, but rarely do they have on board charging, which means you have to buy multiple batteries and a charger that easily adds $60 to the price tag.

Thank you all so far for your replies, very interesting.

What I find hard to believe is the size of the controller heads on the VV/VW APV, looking at what they are and what they house they seem to be quite large. It would be nice if there was a real nice dinky controller head that could be used with any tubes you like.

I have been thinking I might go for an 18500 something like the Dani "M" this is about 97mm in height which would suit my needs. Any one got some good experience with this one ??

What's the average life of a 18500 battery? I am vaping quite heavy and my 1300mah vision spinner running at around 4 volts with my t3s lasts about 10 hours.

thanks again for all your replies so far.

It's Boxy and heavy however i'm really liking my new innokin VTR. Plenty of power, good quality bullet proof construction. What I like most about it is that it fits in my back pocket just fine and because the tank is mounted nearly completely within the unit, the tank is better protected from damage like ".... breaks" or if the unit gets accidentally dropped. It IS heavy though..

I have an iTaste MVP v2 that I just picked up. First, let me say that I hate box mods. Not their functionality, just their looks (personal opinion). It was a "function over form" decision. I did quite a bit of traveling this summer with my two vv v3s, and while they worked well, I just wanted something with more battery life. Now I get about 2 days of vaping on one charge and I can still put it in my pocket.
    Pros:
    Good solid device
    great battery life
Internal battery (I don't want to carry extra batteries. If I am ever out for a long time and know I may need recharging, I have a small 8600 mah USB power pack I can carry with me and charge phone, iPad, and e-cig all at once)

    Cons:
Personal opinion, but I hate the looks
Not as pocket-friendly as my vv v3s

    I agree...
The manufactures seem to take a board and mount it by sliding it up into the tube, it's not a very efficient use of space. It would be nice if they stacked boards (like he kick, not sure what the real term is for stacked boards), then put a screen on one side and a button on the other. Most control heads seem to be the size of an 18350... Which I think is ridiculous and overkill. All things considered I think we are still in the early stages of mods. IMO they will get smaller in time...

I think the form factor of standard circuit boards lends it self to be placed in a box mod, as they are usually rectangular more than round.

The MVP is a pretty big box mod for what it has. The benefit there is the price. I think the vapor shark overall is like 3/4 the size of the MVP, but it's also like 6 times the price! Lol (granted it does give you a DNA 30 instead of innokins 11w board... So it's not exactly apples to apples).

The best 18490/18500 size batteries are the 1100 mah red AW 18490 IMR and 1000 mah purple Efest 18500 IMR/hybrid.

If you are getting 10 hours with a 1300 mah ego, you'll get about 8 - 9 hours with a 1100 mah battery.

Just thought I would thank you all again, I think I have found the setup that would suit my needs.

I have been trawling the net and looking at all sorts of devices and have decided on using an evic supreme controller unit with the siam 18350 or 18500 tubes from pinkmule.com with this set up I can use whichever tube I need, if I am at work I can use the smaller 18350 as when I am not vaping I can plug in with the micro usb to keep charged and if I am going out and want something to last a little longer I can use an 18500.

At least with this setup I can vary the length of my device so I don't have to carry a full size light sabre around with me !!

Thanks again all your comments have been very helpful.
