Newbie who never smoked analogs

I never did smoke cigarettes, probably because I hated the ones my mom smoked when I was little. Had a couple of pipes 20 years ago but gave up on them when I found cigars in the 90s just before the boom. There's still a coolerdor of mostly Honduran cigars in the living room. I don't smoke them much because 1) my employer has excellent benefits but asks about nic use, and 2) I hate the post-smoking taste in my mouth.

starting out
Last month I picked up an Evod kit for a smoker at work. It came with a 2nd unit inside so I kept that one for myself to play with. Originally my plan was to find some 0nic tobacco flavors. Seems this was doomed to fail as all the tobacco flavs I've tried so far are bizarre in their own way.
Digression: it would be neat if someone bought 20 different tobacco flavors, decanted them into 1ml vials and shipped the tester for $20. Maybe print off a numbered list with room for notes and only show the brand on a back page to facilitate blind tasting. It gets expensive buying bottles just to try them once and then PIF.

DIY
Since tobacco seems elusive/impossible for me I've tried some other stuff. Liked a banana nut bread and one coffee but with juice being close to $1/ml at my local I decided to DIY some simple stuff. Made some 0.5ml - 1.0ml microbatches of some single flavoring stuff (mainly TFA). Really liked caramel @ 7.5%, gingerbread cookie @ 7.5%, cinnamon spice @ 0.75%, and caramel cappucino @ 1 drop/10ml (!). Made up some 30ml batches of those in dropper bottles and continuing to try other stuff.

Hardware
The evod I started with. Not a cloud chaser so the vapor production of this pen is just fine with me. Bought a glass clearomizer evod tank for it so I could run cinnamon as mentioned above.

Ordered an iStick 60w but it's not here yet. I don't like the clunky, offbalance look of box mods but this one is more oval and has the atty centered. And lets me use my own 18650 instead of built-in. I won't need TC or the high wattage but wanted this design. Also ordered a Kato clone mech for side-by-side goodness, but I might've ordered the iStick Basic if I'd seen that one first.

Picked up a Stillaire v4 RDA clone to make quick flavor testing easier. Haven't built anything on it yet. I will after the iStick arrives. Built a couple test coils on a Kayfun v4 clone but don't have anything to fire it up on yet. :) Man, that thing is complicated...

Anyhow, that's where I am.

Was just over a year ago when I ordered for my father in law, but Aquavapor aquavaporcig.com had a ten pack sampler for $29.95. Nine different tobacco flavors plus a coffee to make an even ten.

Welcome and glad you joined. We have a similar cigar background.
Couple of my favorite tobaccos:
TFA RY4 (Double) Tobacco,--5% tobacco blend with caramel tones Avg.mixing quantity: 7%
TFA Black Honey (Tobacco),-- 5% Black Honey--8 to 10%. TFA Black Honey Tobacco in the 7-10% range is pretty killer. I do get a nice honey/spice flavor. No additives needed. It MUST steep for 3+ weeks. 4-5 weeks seems to get it the best.

Just looked; they still run samplers but I can't post links yet. /newb shame
Thanks for the tip.

I do have those from TFA but haven't mixed them yet. I should get them started since you mentioned needing weeks of steep. I'll start tonight.

I also opened tabs with the additional reading; thanks!

Most folks are far more impatient than older folks like us. One can taste the mix's after 1,2,3 weeks just to get an idea, but with tobacco, I really need 4 weeks minimum for most. When I first started out, I did not mix quite enough mixes to wait 4 weeks. I ended up making a large quantities of a know good mix(s), (1 or 2 as I recall), to tied me over. The trick is to get so many mixes steeping (known good mixes and unknown experimental) that you will always have enough known good and unknow mixes to last at least 2 months or more. Unknown mixes = approx. 2 mils, Known mixes = 60 mils or greater depending on:
How many known are proven.
How much you vape at a time.
How secure/confident of mixture--is it likely to need to change.
Are you actively looking for an improvement alternate same type of recipe that you hope will be a substitute.

I'm guessing you would probably prefer non-tobacco flavoured e-juices since you have not smoked analogs before. Just funny how you went straight for the tobacco-flavoured ones upon getting your hands on your first setup but we all make newbie mistakes so don't sweat it.

Well, I come from a cigar background and I like robust cigars (like Hondurans) so I figured tobacco would be a safe bet. I don't think it's a mistake so much as expecting too much from tobacco flavored juice.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm definitely more patient than my younger, more fiery self. :)

I'm used to letting things sit - I homebrew with 2-month primary fermentations on average and let it carb for a couple more months. As you point out the trick is to have plenty of stuff going so you aren't ever caught out. In brewing we call this keeping a full pipeline; dunno if vapers use a similar term.

I already owned lots of lab glass, magnetic stirrers, test tube stands, funnels, etc from yeast ranching so I didn't have to spend anything on that. And I'm used to documenting and labeling because all yeast samples look alike on agar. :)

That sounds about right. I am doing test microbatches as small as 0.5ml in centrifuge tubes up to 5-10ml in screwtop test borosilicate tubes.

Bought some 30ml dripper bottles in bulk from Amazon but have only made a couple of those.

I appreciate your input on steeping strategy.
