Just saying hi to the community -- I've smoked cigs for something like 28 years and it's long past time to give them up. Better health and a fatter wallet are good motivators! I came across the forum while researching e-cigs, and I think I've learned a lot just by lurking. Hope to learn more as an active participant. So thanks to all of you -- for the advice you've been giving me these last few weeks without even knowing it, and for the advice I know you'll give once I get rolling with the Triton!

Welcome to ECF, and congratz on switching to vaping!

The Halo Triton is OKish at best (way overpriced). You can get a similar setup at a much lower price that will work as well or better. But, that said, if it gets you off of cigarettes, worth every penny - if you like the Halo setup, go with it! I'll list the alternative below.

The Triton Tank is in most respects just an old Kanger T2, which come in at 4$ each (replacement heads also 4$ for five).
650mah Ego batteries? Probably less than 10$ each.
Chargers, around 10$ for the wall adapter and ego charge cable.
~40$

If you spent the extra 25$, (to match the cost of the Halo Triton kit at 65$) you could get glass tanks and twist batteries, providing a much better vape and variable voltage to customize your experience.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Fattlestar -- I didn't want to go DIY in making this switch -- it's going to be an adjustment (one I'm ready to do, but having tried to kick the cig habit once or twice over the years I know it's not easy even if my head's in the right place). I wanted more of a no muss, no fuss, open the box and go approach. Maybe at some point I'll decide to try DIY on equipment and (maybe) liquid, but for now I think that off the shelf is the best move. Appreciate the advice, though, in case I want another tank system for backup or to replace the Triton if something goes wrong with it.

I completely understand, and as I said, if you like the Triton, it is the best choice for you! And, to clear things up, the Triton being a relative of the Kanger T2 is a good thing - I love my Kanger T2's, pretty much the best vape for the price I've found (although I have moved on to better items), so I am sure you will enjoy your Triton tanks. Halo's e-liquids are excellent though, so if you decided to get some of that, you're in for a treat I'm sure.

Extras are always good. The general rule of thumb is at least two of everything, just to make sure you have a backup. A lot of people make the mistake of using BOTH at the same time and then end up needing to charge both at same time - leaving a gap where you may need to vape. If you only have the two to start with, just make sure to stagger the usage a little bit so that you end up in a charging cycle that leaves no downtime (and the opportunity to fall back into other habits!)

Extra coils are a must have. Occasionally you will get a factory dud (even the first one installed could be a bad one!) so having a pack of five to start with, or even a couple of extra singles, is a very good idea.

Also, don't be afraid to branch out from just tobacco flavors. If you have any local brick and mortar shops, you could probably try some different things for free, as many have "sample" bars.

One good thing about the Triton starter kit is that it has 2 of what seemed to me to be the key things (batteries and tanks). Will cross my fingers that I don't get factory duds in the kit though!

I'm sure I'll branch out from the tobacco flavors at some point -- while I know that vaping is not the same experience as smoking cigarettes, I am looking to replicate some of what I "like" about the cigs in the short term while learning to enjoy the experience of vaping as its own thing. I did find a couple of B&M shops in the Metro Detroit area, and over the holiday I'll take some time to check them out and try some different flavors. They also supply Halo e-liquids, which is good in case I find myself in a shipping time pinch (plus I do like to support local businesses when I can).

ferndale - I started out with a Triton kit, too, and was very pleased with it. In fact, I still use it, mainly for my tobacco flavored juices. Triton juice is very good but quite expensive compared to some other brands. I use the Triton vv battery and have my originals as backups. Of course, I've also added other gear as I've gone along but the Tritons are still in daily use. Enjoy and welcome to the wonderful world of vaping!

I used Tritons and similar batteries for quite awhile. Here are some things to help along the way.

The Triton battery has 808/ego threading. It is a bit hard to find toppers to fit. The Triton tank is pretty much a Kanger T2 with slightly different threading. The great thing about the T2 is that it will screw on and work on the Triton battery as well as a more common 510/ego threaded battery. Any Kanger T2 will work and all of the replacement heads are the same. Here are the cheapest I have found:

Kanger T2 Sunfire 70mm Long Wick Replacement Atomizer Coils 5-Pack - VapingME.com

Kanger T2 Sunfire 2.4 - 2.6ohm Clearomizer / Cartomizer - VapingME.com

For other toppers try Smokeless Image. They sell a similar battery and have a variety of devices.

Congrats on making the switch! The Halo setup is nice - it was my first one also and 13 months later, i still use it along with a couple others. :)

As far as the Kanger T2's, the coils are totally interchangeable and VapingMe is a good company to buy from. But the T2's themselves are kind of a crap shoot. I've bought many from them and a couple worked on my tritons...but most didn't. They'd screw on fine but wouldn't fire. So you may want to get your tanks from Halo but definitely get the coils from VapingMe (lots cheaper)

Halo Triton is an EXCELLENT kit to start vaping on. I know several people on ECF who quit smoking using a Triton system, they are very well made.

Even if they decide to get something else (and many don't...many people still use their original kits) it can be a backup.

I started with the Triton as well... and I'm still using it after a year. I find the hardware to be superior to the ego T and most other ego knockoffs out there. The batteries charge super fast, and last me all day of heavy vaping. The tanks are good too, no leaking issues and the vapor production is excellent. I really can't see myself walking around with a huge mod... pain in the bollocks to carry unless you have a purse. I do have the Triton vv and that thing puts out more vapor than I could ever want. To each his own I suppose.

Halo Triton is far superior to Joyetech eGo-T if we are talking about those atomizer and cartridge set-ups. (Tornado-T, type A+B etc.)

The question in the UK is whether one wants to pay the premium to buy from Halo all the time. Most e-cig brands use readily available components, some of which are half the price bought from an independent vaping store.

We have a UK company that sells the same hardware as Halo. I try to stop people buying from them, as the running costs are nearly double.

There is mention on this thread of a company called Vaporfi. I realise that the poster of this comment lives outside the US and may be limited in choice.
Vaporfi sell re-branded Kanger products for unacceptable prices. Their latest special offer is to sell Kanger EMOW kits for $119.99, which are $50 elsewhere.

The e-cig business is full of cons and shills. Most of the reviews are bogus as somebody, somewhere has a vested interest in assisting in ripping people off. It is pretty sad and an indictment of the way things are.

Halo are a terrific brand with great liquids. Thankfully, although they are a little expensive, they are good. Last time I looked, Halo asked for $7 for a tank which I know people can buy for $4. Not a great deal of money, but worth mentioning.
