Hi Everyone, I am as new to this as it comes. I have been a Marlboro Red 100"s smoker for 25 years. Over the years I have cut back to about 1/2 a pack a day. Yesterday I took the plunge and bought a Evod starter kit. So far it's not going so well. I really want to like it. I got the 18 mg nicotine juice. I realize I have to figure out how to inhale it but whenever I tried it yesterday I coughed a lot. Also, I was feeling pretty lightheaded after taking a puff, that lasted most of the day yesteday. Should I buy a less nicotine juice because maybe I am sensitive to the amount. Can anyone tell me if this is normal for the first day? Thanks in advance for your support and help!! :)

What is the VG/PG ratio on the juice you are using? I have found that high PG levels are more harsh. I now vape at 80% VG. Everyone is different, try changing your ratio till you find what you like. Try 50/50, to see if it's less harsh. Also, you may have over tightened you atomizer, which can bend coils creating hot spots, which, if this happened, will give a nasty harsh hit. Only tighten till contact is made.

It could be several things, 18mg shouldn't be to high for you, but drop down to 12 or 6mg, if you think that's the case. I vape 12mg now, was at 24, but since I started rba's the nic delivery is so much better, that I had to step it down.

The first time that I tried, I coughed till my throat hurt, but it will pass that moment in a several days when you get used to it. It not like smoke cig, your body need the adjust time. Try draw slower than you smoke cig, like 3-5 second draw, that should get you a better vape. For the nicotine, if you not comfortable with 18mg you could try 12mg and see what it's like, and if it don't satisfy your urge then you could up your nic. Keep on vaping :toast:

If you can get pure VG (vegetable glycerin used in food industry) Than use it to dilute both nic and PG. than you should know what is responsible for your situation.
Now somenody can be lucky enough to find right liquid in first try. However one has to go between PG/VG rates and nic level before he/she gets a decent vape. so go to it my friend.
Meanwhile if you get the vape like cigarettes it makes you cough too. As above mentioned (Mark anthony)best is to get vape into your mouth and try to inhale to your lungs afterwards.
Happy vapings

Hi Everyone, I am as new to this as it comes. <snip> Can anyone tell me if this is normal for the first day? :)

Welcome to ECF!! And yes perfectly normal!!

When you draw, take a slow, gentle, long draw, very different from a cigarette. Hold the vapor in your mouth and then inhale, or simply exhale it through your noes. The nicotine is mostly absorbed in your mouth and nose, not in your lungs, although most will inhale out of habit (it's OK to do so...) The strength of your liquid just needs to be such as it keeps the cravings to smoke away, and can be different for each vaper. 18mg is about average for many noobs, but you can adjust up or down to your liking. A little practice should cure the cough, although some my linger until the smoking crud of 25 year vintage is cleared out.

I smoked 40+ years, and have since totally lost my smoker's cough, (hack up a lung in the AM...)

You guys are wonderful. Thanks for all the great advice. I am going to back to the vapor shop I bought my stuff at today and tell them to give me one with less nicotine. I need to figure out how to inhale it properly. I think I was inhaling it like a cigarette right into my lungs. I will try to fiddle around with it today and keep you informed on my journey. Thanks again!!

Hi Everyone, I'm back. I am still having a hard time switch over. I ran into someone that had an ecig that looks more like a reg cig. The brand is Freedom, much like Blu, I think. They are made here in Michigan and sold in The Tobacco Shop. I loved it when I tried hers. I went there yesterday and bought the starter kit, with 18mg cartridges. I felt fine when I took a few puffs but than I again, felt so groggy that I had to go lay down. I still feel like that this morning. I am going to go back and just by the 6 mg cartridge so if that is the culprit. It doesn't show the exact juice mix on the box.

Is it possible that when inhaling the ecig, I get a lot more nicotine than an analog? Just trying to figure this out.

Thanks again!!!

Don't give up.... It may take a little while just take shorter hits and like other say maybe hold in your mouth. Also you don't hit it like a cig for 5 mins at a time. Take a couple hits put it down then wait a couple minutes and hit it once or twice again. It is not like cig smoke so it is foreign to your lungs may take a couple days. I had the harsh taste at first also and coughed like a freight train. Find a smooth taste at the vape shop and take it slow. When you get urge to smoke just take a few hits till satisfied. You got this just keep vaping.

There is tons of support here just ask away and people with a lot more advice then I just hang in there.

ohmama222,

The more reading you do, the more you will find out that everyone is different. Some people need more nicotine, some people need less. The most reliable information seems to be that smoking a regular cigarette delivers more nicotine more quickly than vaping. Smoke particles are more micronized and get deeper in to your lung tissue than nicotine vapor, for instance. I think that for everyone, the transition from tobacco to nicotine vapor is a bit of a shock for your lungs and takes a little getting used to.

I was a one-pack-a-day man who smoked fast, inhaled deeply and didn't stop until filter was melting. My plan was to "wean myself down" from 24 mg to 0 mg over five 30ml bottles. When I started on the 12mg, I lost it and had to buy a few packs of analogs to keep me sane until I got more 24mg nicotine liquid. I've had about two brief episodes of annoying cough that lasted a day or two, but have been okay settled at 20mg for three months now.

My advice would be experiment as much as you want, but keep everything you buy in case once your lungs have transitioned from smoke to vapor, you will have everything you might need on down the road already at hand. If you really seem to settle in to being satisfied with 12mg liquid, you can always mix your 24mg leftovers 50/50 with a bottle of 0mg to save money.

Carry on!
