I'm a nonsmoker, but I joined to ask a question. A friend of a friend is looking to try ecigs. Any recommendations?

I only know that he is a heavy smoker. It seems njoy may be a very close mimic for a new ecig user if only it did not have such a short battery life.

Hopefully you have a suggestion that looks, feels, and tastes like a cig for an absolute newbie. For my curiosity, has anyone here jumped straight off into vaping with an ego, without any disposables or other intermediate stops along the way? I'm afraid it seems quite a bit bigger and heavier than a beginner would tolerate.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

If there's a Vape shop in your area, have your friend of a friend swing by and give them a visit. You can get a hands-on experience with some different vapes and juices and pick the one that suits you best. In my opinion, forget the cig-a-likes and get a decent rig right off the bat and vape with confidence!! And you might as well know, nothing will look, taste and feel like a cigarette....and that's a good thing!!

I never used disposables or a cig-a-like when I made a transition from smoking to vaping. I started with an E-Power 14650 which is an eGo-sized tube mod with an 1100 mAh battery. I used it to quit a pack and a half a day cigarette habit and kept using it for a year before upgrading.

I think that eGo type devices are the minimal device most heavy smokers will need to have a realistic chance of quitting. However, I have one friend who quit with a Blu and still uses it.

I have yet to step into a brick and mortar e-cig shop.

Hello jessica. Here lies the dilemma. Most smokers want something that looks, feels, and tastes like a cigarette. Truth is, that's not gonna happen.

We're talking about batteries being able to provide enough current to a heating coil to vaporize liquid into vapor. The little cigalike batteries can do a decent job for 2...3...maybe 4 hours, then poop out. You would need to carry at least half a dozen batteries around with you to last an entire day, and then spend your evenings trying to charge them all for the next day. These can be useful to get your foot into the door of vaping, but may not be enough to stop smoking or stay off of them.

They also only use cartidges, or cartomizers, as their only juice attachment. Not everyone likes those, especially the pre-filled ones. I think its safe to say that anyone who starts out with a cigalike sooner or later ends up advancing to an eGo battery or a mod that uses a replaceable rechargeable battery.

Advancing Up the Vaping Ladder with Ego's & Mods

Only by using the bigger batteries (cigar-size) which allow longer battery time and more options in juice carriers can you find a satisfying vape, IMHO.

A Good Starter Setup for a Beginning Vapor

Someone who desires to stop smoking has to make concessions about size of batteries to be successful. Using an e-cigarette is NOT smoking, but something entirely different. Vaping can get you off of cigarettes if the person is serious about quitting.

Thanks for all the advice. It seems everyone recommends an ego. Any ideas on which liquids to go with it? And would you recommend getting a disposable as an intro as well as the ego, or would you throw him in the deep end?

I'm looking for a decent setup for about $100. He's heading off to China, so I want him to get a good supply of anything he would need to get him hooked before he leaves.

China? Lol.
Ecigs started there.

And yes, throw him in the deep end, I jumped in there after over 40 years of smoking, An ego may not be much for looks, but it removes a lot of the roadblocks and irritations (common to cigalikes) which would have frustrated me and led to my going back to analogs.

Get him a black Ego twist (900 mah or more, an ego cone , a couple of black 510 Nanos--makes for nice "look") and a couple of sample bottles of juices. See what name brand juices your local B&M carries and people here can give you some juice suggestions.

Good luck with your friend's friend.

I used the disposable ones, found them having no effect what so ever, I was a heavy smoker. Found myself going out for a cig and in between smoking the disposable ones!

I really think if they are serious about wanting to vape it's worth spending that little bit more.

The person who is going to use the e-liquids should be the one choosing them. Preference in flavors are extemely subjective. What one person likes another will hate it.

There are more vape shops in Southern California than anyplace in the US, and most of them have juice tasting stations to sample flavors for free before you buy. Have your friend of a friend visit one of these vape shops. Home - ECF E Cigarette Store Locator

In that case, just get him a non-refundable gift certificate for a local B&M and let him figure it out. :)

Thanks for the info, everyone! I'm sending him off to the nearest B+M (incidentally, just 2 mi away from me!).

My main worry with the Ego is that he is in his sixties or seventies, and may not be inclined to "fiddle" with parts. He probably just wants something dependable that is grab-n-go.

I called the B+M, just to make sure they have disposables. They do... but they don't have NJOY (wonder why?). However, their lowest ego/clearomizer kit with liquid is $25, which is reasonable....I think.....

Anyway, my friend will bring him there soon to try things out. I hope he will like what he finds... ecigs are much better than smoking!

Thank you all for your kind support!

As a person in his 60's, I'll have you know that "fiddle" is what we live for and "grab and go" has unfortunately become a way of life.
