Hi Cranky, welcome to ECF. The thing with pipe tobacco is the way it is cured it has a lower PH level (alkaline)and is designed to absorb the nicotine into the mouth like cigars and not the lungs.
Cigar smoke and smoke from traditionally cured pipe tobaccos is alkaline, so
nicotine from these products is readily absorbed in the mouth. Inhalation is unnecessary for nicotine absorption from cigar smoke.
Moreover, inhalation of cigar smoke is difficult because the smoke is inherently irritating.
Freebase, alkaline nicotine tends to be more in the vapor phase of cigar smoke than in the particulate phase, and, as mentioned above, is inherently irritating.
While inhalation of cigar and pipe smoke occurs, especially in people who also have smoked cigarettes, it is not necessary for nicotine absorption.

Cigarette smoke is more acidic than cigar smoke. This characteristic results in the nicotine from cigarettes mainly being in the ionized, non-free base form, dissolved in the smoke particles instead of out in the vapor phase. The nicotine in cigarette smoke cannot be readily absorbed in the mouth or nose. Inhalation is necessary for absorption to occur. Inhalation is facilitated by the fact that cigarette smoke feels less harsh in the throat than does cigar smoke.
This is related to nicotine being dissolved in the smoke particles instead of being in the vapor phase. Claims of “mildness,” which have been a staple of cigarette advertising for much of this century, reflect this property of cigarette smoke.
I have not seen any info on the alkaline properties of e-liquid but will keep an eye out. Although it would be nice to know which is best, mouth or lungs, I think I may have to research this further. I hate it when people make me think, lol.
Anyway, nicotine levels in real tobacco can vary greatly from crop to crop and also depends on how it is cured. You might try a search for nicotine levels and tobacco curing methods. You will need to know how your brand of tobacco is cured.

Start with 36mg and go down or cut it with VG if it's too strong. If you get too weak liquid at first your stuck with something you will never use because you can't really make it into 36mg if that is what you need.

Hope this helps, Vince.

thanks for the feedback We have been using the RYO pipe tobacco sold in the one pound bags as an alternative to the cigarette tobbacco that went up in price by $24 a bag, and rolling it into analogs since April. We got our 510's yesterday and I had ordered 24mg juice to go with it so far it seems to be satisfying that craving hopefully we can cut it down later on as that is our eventual goal.

When I started I used the 24mg for about 3 weeks and after I got used to the vapor instead of smoke I had to go up to 36mg due to cravings, but then went back down to 24mg after a few weeks. I always buy the 36mg flavorless and cut it with VG and flavors which saves me a lot more $$.

The 510 is the best you can get, you will be happy with it.

The RYO 'pipe' designation is only a workaround for the SCHIPS 2500% tax on cigarette tobacco.

Normally it is as Vince has laid out - pipe tobacco is normally 'fire cured' which results in a higher nicotine content with the intent being to get the nic hit from the mouth vs. the lungs.

Cigarette tobacco is 'normally' "Flue Cured" which has a lower nicotine content for lung absorbtion.

But the 'pipe' designation in RYO tobacco does not have that distinction - it is still - the stuff that's intended for RYO/MYO - flue cured cigarette type tobacco - usually maintaining the same name as it had when sold as cigarette tobacco but now specified as 'pipe cut' tobacco. It's the size of the cut that was in the legislation.... and a loophole that is very likely to be closed by only allowing fire cured tobacco to be sold as pipe tobacco - and as is the case, one gets 180 degrees opposite the intent of the gov't - you will then have MYO cigarette smokers, smoking a even higher nic content tobacco in order to avoid the tax. IOW, another case of unintended consequences. Of course the ultimate solution (at least for now) is the one we chose. :)

Good info Kent, I can see how they got wise to this and hit those hard($24 per pound).

As to flavors, Cranky, everyone is different. I liked fruit flavors and vanilla at first but got tired of the sweet taste and now I like the tobacco flavors like RY4, or "Taboo" as it is called where I get it at Welcome to LiquidXpress.

I get flavorless liquid from JuicyLiquid.com, DIY E-Liquid and Accessories! and they have a lot of other flavors as well.

Vince,

Yeah, the tax on MYO was at the manufacturer level so I was making MYO for 73 cents a pack, which more than doubled when the new tax took effect. They (feds and states and counties in sales tax) were losing way too much revenue. MYO was really catching on and frankly still going strong.

If you're going for 'non-sweet' check out Decadent Vapours if you haven't already. They're down right now but say they'll be up first week in September.... Focus on Absinthe (anise), Habana Reserve (supposedly Cuban cigar but it has an RY4 smokey/woodsy taste but more even, and I'm loving Black Currant that tastes like the fruit part of a dry cab (ie. not sweet, but still with the fruit note). I'd pass on the Roast Beef although it _does_ taste like Roast Beef to me.... just not a 'long term' vape for me. The MenthoEucapytus is the strongest "menthol" I've had and like I said in another post - I'll be using it as a cold medicine ;-) ... or a fraction of a drop on DIY stuff. It's good tasting but just really strong. I stayed away from the 'dessert' flavors because I was going for the 'not so sweet' as well, but with the quality of the juice and from Mooby's reviews on apple pie and tiramisu they're like good as well. Frist three mentioned above are in 'current rotation' along with RY4, cap, TC, Newport, and Drew's Nuport, Banana Cream.... :)

Looks like we posted at the same time I will check out the flavors you mentioned interested in the menthol since that was my brand of choice and the one I did get tastes more like a mint. I do not see me using the dessert or food flavors at this time but who knows in the future but I do think I will avoid the roast beef lol.

If you like menthol try the crystals from Juicyliquid. just drop a couple in and you get "real" menthol, not mint. Cheap too. Any liquids I try that i don't like get the crystals so i can stand to use them, lol.

Thanks for the tip I did see those and did not buy them because I had not seen anyone comment on them do you put them in the liquid itself or in the cart?

Thanks for the info on the cigar flavor Kent. I had found one a while back that was absolutely divine, then when I ordered several bottles they changed their formula and it is horrible now.

I hate when that happens ;-) I'll still trying to duplicate the original 'hilton and ry4' I got from ruyandirect. I may have to just DIY...

I'll give Decadent a try.

Worth a shot. Hopefully they won't change. Seems they're in negotiations with TW which appears to have increased the price :-| but not sure on that. I got it from England direct from D.V. I must have been the last order before they went down... Moobyghost has a review on the habana... I'd slightly disagree with some comments but likely just on 'different tastebud' grounds. The thing I find is that they have multiple flavors going on. That's what (if the flavors are good) differentiates, for me, a great cab from just a good cab. One has a few things going on, the other is a one trick pony, but if that one trick is good, it's still enjoyable. When it's a lame trick, then you've just wasted some money. lol.
