These doctors are clearly not pro vaping advocates. All in all a good article. I had a particular question regarding this statement:
"One research study concluded that using e-cigarettes to kick the habit is 50 per cent more effective than free will alone, but not quite as good as a full-fledged smoking cessation program."
Tried to look up "full-fledged smoking cessation program" in Google and there is no definition available.

They seem to be saying that using "approved" NRT plus some kind of counseling by a "qualified priofessional" is more effective at smoking cessation than vaping is... and that is just not true, not by any stretch of the imagination. Just another instance of doctors' bias toward other doctors and BP. Something that "layman" prescribe to themselves can't POSSIBLY be as as effective as anything a DOCTOR would prescribe! As if all those who are NOT doctors or part of BP are just drooling idiots.

I never even considered any form of "cessation program" to quit smoking. Just not the sort of person who can be easily influenced by others. Worked in engineering for 43 years, I need solid proof before buying into anything ... :?:

Can't recall ever hearing anyone I knew proclaim that they had quit smoking with NRTs and/or counseling. There must be some success stories there, but maybe they just don't talk about it ...

My dentist got me started with vaping in 2013, after a multiple extraction. Smoking would have been excruciatingly painful for a few days. Ironically, he is a never-smoker who is single and into the club scene and cloud chasing with 0 nic ... :vapor:

I respect my dentist as a professional, but I didn't start vaping because he told me to in his professional capacity, he didn't do that. I did it because as a friend he showed me a way to avoid going bonkers with nic cravings in addition to a very sore jaw ... :(

For which I am grateful ... :D

My mother did finally quit smoking after about 10 yrs of effort, using every form of NRT she could get her hands on, and straws. I'm not convinced the NRT really helped her, because she relapsed so many times before it finally stuck, for her to be a non-smoker -- I think the fact that her COPD had gotten completely out of hand was really more effective than anything; the only thing that EVER kept me from smoking, before vaping, was if my asthma was so bad that I could barely even breathe, nevermind smoke, but I still craved them even when I damn well knew better than to light them -- sometimes I'd try to rush it, get a hit or two before I was completely overwhelmed with coughing. So I know very well that her cessation could be attributed as much to self-preservation as to the NRT -- much like my own abstention from alcohol -- it does feel good to stop ramming your head into a wall.

Kudos on the excellent dentist. Dentistry has always been traumatic to me, so I'm sure it's very helpful if your dentist is also your friend. When I first mentioned I was thinking of trying e-cigs to my doctor, he said he'd heard of good success with quitting by using them, so he thought I should give it a try, if i was not interested in any other NRT and couldn't bring the number I smoked down drastically -- my doc has sort of been prescribing THR for all the years I've said no thx to NRT -- just try to cut down as much as I could, if I couldn't quit. I had managed to bring it from a high point of about 3.5 pks a day, to somewhere around 3/4 pk a day; vaping got me over that last bit that I just couldn't do without.
