I've never tried DIY juice but with all the FDA hoopla I'm considering it. I definitely don't want to mess with pure nic, I'd rather use unflavored nicotine VG/PG. I think the other ingredients are basically just water and food flavoring, right?

So I guess this is the forum to watch to see where to buy unflavored nicotine VG/PG after all the FDA regs go into effect? Surely it will still be available somewhere.

There are a lot of places where you can buy 100mg nic, but also many provide different strengths also.
ie. 24mg 36mg 48mg 60mg and 75mg. They offer a choice of pg/vg and some offer a 50/50 mix.

Some that are well liked are vaperstek . org(if pasted in browser just delete the spaces.
Nude Nicotine(google for addy). They offer long-term storage options but are more expensive.
Wizard Labs.
There are also plenty of threads here in the DIY forum DIY E-Liquid for all the info you need to DIY.

Good luck.

Best option is to start stocking up on nicotine liquid. USP (99.5% pure) VG and PG will still be available despite whatever the FDA does, along with flavorings. Most flavorings already state "for food use only", so it's very unlikely they'll be regulated the same as nicotine liquid.

Nicotine liquid is available in various strengths and base liquids (PG, VG, or some ratio of PG/VG). Most are stocking up on 100mg/ml strength liquid, which will last nearly indefinitely if stored in the freezer. Nicotine will oxidize, and is light sensitive, so it needs to be protected from sunlight and oxygen. When stored in glass and in a freezer, it won't go bad.

That's why most go with the 100mg/ml strength liquid - it takes up a lot less space in the freezer, and gets taken out much less often. Every now and then I dilute some of the 100mg/ml in 30ml glass bottles to a strength of 30mg/ml, and that's what I mix liquid from. 90 ml of 30mg liquid is enough nicotine to last me around two months (enough for about 900ml of finished liquid @ 3mg/ml), so I'm not constantly taking my nic out of the freezer and exposing it to air.

NOT food flavorings - there can be oils, sugars and other things in flavorings made to eat that you don't want to inhale. There are a couple flavorings vendors out there where you will notice they make a line of flavorings for food (and have been doing so for a long time) and they make a separate line just for vaping which won't have ingredients that are best left out of your lungs.

That, and many food flavorings are woefully low in concentrations to get you much of any flavor when inhaled as a vapor.

Short version: Stay away from the McCormick's in the grocery store baking aisle. Only buy flavorings specifically made for inhalation.

True, not all food flavorings are suitable for vaping.

However, many flavor companies don't market their products specifically for vaping, even though that may be what most people use them for. For example, Capella and The Flavorers Apprentice do not market their flavors for vaping at all, just for food use.

It would be extremely difficult for the FDA to regulate their products. They're careful to in no way market them for vaping, just for food use. My flavor bottles include "Only for use in food" on the label.

Just pointing out that for DIYers, we shouldn't be too worried about the FDA regs as they apply to our flavorings, PG, or VG. Most will not be regulated as tobacco products - the exception are flavors/VG/PG that are marketed or intended specifically for vaping.

If you want a high VG finished liquid and your nic is 100%PG it's gonna be more difficult to achieve.
Likewise the opposite is also true, if you want a high PG finished liquid but your nic base is all VG....well, same thing. For these reasons I use the 50/50 blend.

However if You like only VG in all your liquids it's not likely your gonna order nic. with any PG in it.
No matter what ratio you decide on they will all store the same. Cheers.

They should make this a sticky now that so many will be taking the plunge into DIY. I can see I'll be posting the below information a lot and I hope it don't begin to look like overkill on my part.

My blogs will give insight into all aspects of DYI, from steeping to what supplies to have on hand to a basic walk through mixing your first E-juice.

Then read hoosier's blogs. These blogs concentrate on fine tuning your mix and give insight on additives.

Then read Boletus's blog's. These blogs concentrate on formulation of nicotine bases regarding proper calculations methods for figuring Nicotine concentration as well as safety.

Then read Ginger's book "E-Cigarettes 102: DIY E-Liquid". It is a book which I've contributed to that delivers an in depth easy to follow guide in the art of DYI.

I recommend viewing VPLive Vape Team Episode #82: DIY Safety and bookmark it for future reference. It explains safety in all aspects of DYI.

then read the stickies at the top of the page.

this will explain a lot of the how's and why's.

I just started DIY, and wasn't sure if I'd want PG or VG for nic base. So, I got both.

Even though I prefer max VG, I still find that a little PG (~10-20%) is best for wicking. For me, anything over 90% VG is tough to wick properly in my tanks. So, I dilute my PG base 100mg nic with PG to 30mg/ml and mix from that. When mixing 3mg/ml finished liquid, that's 10% of the 30mg nic, and the rest is VG and flavorings. Since I typically use 5% flavor or less, it's right at the VG/PG ratio I prefer.
