Nitecore D2 issue

Hey all, my D2 charger is toast. Anyone ever try using the warranty on one of these and care to share your experiences?

I was charging a married pair of VTC4s pulled from my LE80 at 3.5v each. Went in to check on them after a couple hours; the charger's digital display was off, the unit was VERY hot, and both batteries read at 2.5v on my DMM. It hasn't worked since. Battery polarity was correct in the charger btw. No problems through roughly 50 charge cycles. Any idea as to what went wrong?
