The NJ Assembly Cmte on Tourism and Art amended and then approved a bill (A 1080) to ban vaping (as well as smoking) at all public parks and beaches (per ATG statement and Technical Review of Prefiled Bill)
To search for bill, type in A1080 atNew Jersey Legislature

A1080 as introduced last year didn't include e-cig use in its definition of "smoking" (which struck me as odd last year when the bill was introduced since the NJ indoor smoking ban was amended in 2009 to redefine "smoking" as including the use of e-cigs)
A1080

But the Technical Review of A1080 included e-cig use in its definition of "smoking" (using the statute's current definition, and to correct the mistake in the introduced bill)
A1080 TR

And the following ATG statement says the Assembly Cmte approved the changes made in the Technical Review of A1080A1080 ATG Statement 2/20/14

So is it a done deal legally or only a done deal in that the state will probably accept the committee's recommendations?
That is a good question. I can't seem to figure that out. I will call in the morning. I did find a tax hike bill for "tobacco products". A1944. I don't believe it to contain electronic cigarettes.

I had a funny feeling that would happen when I did my media roundup yesterday. Also I mentioned IL SB2202 (college campuses). Although that probably wouldn't have much effect anyway. Sometimes, it's not fun to be prescient.

These ostensibly tobacco-only or minor-only bills are all risky until they get through at least one house IMO.

Also, the sponsor of KY HB309 said something rather chilling last week, as I noted in the HB 267 thread.

Might be interesting to keep a tally of how often these things happen.

I managed to email the bill sponsors today. I suggested they remove e cigarettes from the ban on beaches and parks, and suggested they were doing smokers more harm than good. I also mentioned that legislation of this sort should be based on science not ideology. Also supported my stance with the casaa study along with one by Dr. Farsalinos.

As a follow up, No response from the bill sponsors. Not even the usual generic "thanks for your concern response".I would like to show up with fellow vapers in opposition to this!

One of my two local Assembly reps is a co-sponsor.

Despite the fact that he I am a constituent, a research fellow to a libertarian-leaning think tank (and he's a Republican), and testified before him two weeks ago, I still have not been able to schedule a meeting with him.

Absolutely ridiculous, especially since I've been dealing with vapers from across the U.S. for 3+ years who regularly tell me stories of having great meetings with their own representatives.

They can't hide forever. We need to find out when this comes up for a vote. (we should have a chance to speak right??). If and when this occurs, please let me know and I will be there.
