OK, so let me get this out of the way first... I'm not a new vaper or even a newish one. I've been vaping exclusively (no cigarettes/cigars or whatnot) for three years. I haven't been in the game a long time but have certainly been in it for a while.

That said, I got started vaping by using the Blu disposables, like so many of us who vape today. It was an acceptable product that got the job done. Vapor was OK, throat hit was actually pretty nice, and Blu's flavors were more than decent.

Then, fairly quickly, I decided to go bigger, save some money, and got an Ego Twist setup. Many months and a whole lot of equipment (and a few dollars :p) later, I've got some nice, vapor chucking gear that's more than satisfying. I've been around the block a bit like a whole lot of us here.

Why did I try the NJOY disposable, then? A couple of reasons. Mainly, I'm on a quest to get my mother in law off of her 40+ year habit. She's an old-school and seasoned smoker, and I know that there's more to quitting via vaping than simply getting the best gear. Sometimes, the mental habit needs coddling and stroking until more intermediary measures can be taken. Again, I know what I'm talking about: I smoked for 26 years (I'm 40 now, so do the math ) And quit smoking the first day I vaped.

Over the last couple of years, Blu stepped up their game and have been putting out a significantly higher quality disposable than before. That's good. There have been tons of reviews and comparisons as to the best disposable to use as a gateway e-cig. Tons and tons and tons of times, NJOY came up in these comparisons and generally received high praise.

So I decided to try one to see if it's right for my purposes. Is this a convenient enough and reliable enough product that won't aggrivate her back to analogs? So, I ran to my local drug store and grabbed the strongest King disposable they had (bold). So, here goes:

Availability:
Really good news here: NJOY is available pretty much anywhere that Blu or any other disposables are. That said, it's super simple to run to your local gas station or drug store and pick one up. Want to save a couple of bucks? Order in bulk from their web page. Great availability.

Presentation:
I pretty well liked this part. The NJOY comes in a cool little flip top, clicky plastic case. It remids me of an oversized Zippo lighter. Inside you'll find one tiny e cigarette and room for two more spares if you choose to get some. The pack is hard plastic and seems to be generally pretty durable. As a plus, it'll keep pocket lint off of your NJOY. The ecig itself is identical to the size of an analog (reminds me of the epuffer colibri nano, even the air intakes), has a squishy tip to grip between the teeth, and feels papery to the touch like an analog. No issues here.

Battery Life:
In a word, lacking. In two words, poop sammich. My disposable King died unceremoniously after about eight hours of moderate use... I'm sure there's a ton of juice left in this thing. A new vaper who still need nicotine will be hitting this thing a lot harder than I did and can probably expect six or so hours' use. Not good. At $7.99, I paid a dollar an hour. Really not good. They claim about the equivalent to two packs of smokes worth of life... I'd say it's about a quarter to a third of that or about 10-15 cigarettes worth of life... all for eight bucks. Poopy.

Vapor:
Pretty pathetic, honestly. Even compared to other disposables, this thing is lacking in vapor output. A tiny bit of thin, wispy vapor comes out after a rib-breaking mouth to lung inhale. By cheating a bit by drawing air in the side of my mouth and forcing a lung inhale (not recommended, btw with this thing's tight draw), I produced vapor in an amount that might resemble a light to moderate draw from an analog. Not impressed, particularly considering the short battery life.

Throat hit:
It's there, certainly. NJOY claims 4.5% nicotine, or 45mg in these. I'm not feeling or tasting it. I use 0mg most of the time now, but occasionally hit a homebrew NET that I put together myself with 18mg nicotine. That juice is used in my embarrassing guilty vaping pleasure, my Amanoo Mini. Even with that chintzy thing, I feel the 18mg quickly hit me and knock me for a loop. I don't get that from the NJOY. Not even a little. Even with the lung inhales, I felt minimal hit. I'd guess 8 to 12 mg is a more accurate value and the throat hit is almost entirely due to the nicotine, not the flavor.

Flavor:
Let's go ahead and talk about this, then. I'm not sure what this flavor is, but it only resembles (remotely) actual tobacco. It's a funky mix of celery and cardboard with a bit of fake tobacco on top. Not the worst thing I've vaped, but certainly far from the best. Definitely not what I'd consider a cigarette flavor. If celery and moving crate is a flavor you're interested in, give it a shot.

Reliability:
Saved this for last for a reason. My first experience with this device was the absolutely worst possible: it didn't work, right out of the pack. I had to go back to the store and exchange it for a working model. Not good. I've heard lots of similar stories online. Someone at QA needs to be fired.

Overall:
Not really a mixed bag here. I can't say I'd recommend these for a new vaper or a seasoned one for that matter... I'm certainly not getting one for my mother in law. Too many issues... these things should all work out of the box. She's trying a Blu right now and we'll see how that goes. Overall, I'd give this a 40/100. Generously.

Agree or disagree?

Update:
Just to be thorough, I tried a second (technically third) NJOY. Same results with one exception. This one lasted a whopping 4 hours. Wow.

Ok. From the get go I intended to try three of these out. Although I technically did, the first one was a dud. That being kept in mind, I decided to be thorough and finish the review properly, giving the Njoy king a fair shake. I picked up another bold flavored from the corner drug store but chose to get menthol this time.

Firstly, this one ran like a champ out of the pack. With the first draw I could hear the atomizer sizzling away and this thing actually produced a respectable amount of vapor with a draw very similar to an analog. The little bugger worked for 10 hours, only pooping out towards the last half dozen or so draws. It actually timed out so that the juice and battery both depleted simultaneously. Nice. If ALL of these ran like this one, the only real drawback would be flavor.

Flavorwise, it's a mixed bag. I actually got more tobacco flavoring from this than from the actual tobacco flavored disposable, oddly enough. That was nice. What wasn't nice was how they implemented menthol flavor. The menthol tastes like athletic sports cream. This tasted like a decent fake tobacco vapor that I was sucking through an Icy Hot patch. Not horrible, but certainly less than ideal and REALLY strong and medicinal.

Quality contol needs work at Njoy. If all of their disposables worked out of the pack like this one, they'd be a contender for a decent gateway product. Flavor sucks, but that's an easy enough fix... get new juice at the plant. Its a real shame... for a disposable, the Njoy kings do a whole lot right and they have TONS of potential. Their consistency in performance is horrible, though. Out of four units, ONE performed properly and overall really, really well. And that's a horrible batting average.
