Can anyone recommend an RTA similar to the Nautilus Mini. This is for someone who is using it to give up smoking, successfully so far. Not wanting to get into subohm, I don't trust the safety of those massive amounts of flavour and vapour, just had enough of spending on expensive coils for the Nautilus mini.

are you ok with making and wicking your own coils??

KAYFUN or any of the million other RTAs based on this style or design.
Any of the Subohm tanks that have RTA base available and Air control. Just because they put a 1/2ohm coil in it at the factory, does NOT mean you must run it with such a coil.
What is it about the derringer you don't like?? The airiness or the having to drip it? Can't do anything about the Air.. But dripping can be fix via a Botton Feeding mod. I hated drippers and was positive I needed a high wattage regulated mod, till I got my smokeless owl mod.

Just as a try out and for not too much of an investment, the EHPRO mini buddha is a nice device. Easy build and wicking. Only issue is filling by a screw on bottom but in spite of my collection of erlks, taifuns, phenoms, calix etc etc I have two and use them every day!

I'm just after the convenience of the nautilus, and the air resistance, but with the ability to make coils. Maybe something like the kanger subtank mini, could I build that with 1.6ohm coils?

Kanger sells coilheads pre-built at 1.5 and 1.2. So yes you could do you own, at 3ohm if you choose. You just need to buy the RBA base. Personally I would go with a TRUE RTA, if you plan on building coil. Is just easier to build for an atomizer designed for building, Rather than a Clearomizer adapted to it.

Budget priced tootle tanks that are easy to build:

Taifun GT2 (clone as authentic is $180)
Hurricane clone (the authentic is $175)
Original Lemo or Lemo Drop (on clearance for about $16 now and IMO better than a Kayfun)
HCigar HC Plus ($20 at Froginfog)
UD Aga t5 ($10 at Triangle Vape, and maybe VapeNW?)
Nectar clone ($9 at Focalecig, authentic is $145)
Ataman 2 clone ($25 at Froginfog, authentic is $120)

Harder builds, but awesome:
Rose v2 or v2-s (clones are $20-25, authentics are harder to find and about $190)
Taifun GS2 or GSL (clones are $18-23, authentics are $140+). Only harder due to needing to make mesh feeder straws. The plastic tubes that come with them caused flooding for me.
Flash e Vapor (clones about $25, authentics about $140 with shipping). Again, need mesh feeder wicks.

eXpromizer. Easy build and awesome vape. Authentics about $60-70. Not sure if there is a clone.

Kayfun lite is still a great option for MTL, and good flavor. It's one of the easier RTAs to build and maintain IMO.

I agree completely.

I use a Kayfun Lite Plus with Bell cap, and a Goblin Mini.

Build both of them at .8-1 ohm

My Kayfun has double airflow channels and can almost lung hit it.

You should take a look at the Hurricane RBA that they have on FT. As Roxy said, it is very easy to build and works well. I have 2 of them. If you are set on the KFL+, I would take a look at the Kayfun Monster base. It has quite a lot more airflow over the 1 or 2 airhole KFL+. Depending on what mod you are using, you can also look at the KS models on FT. They hold 7ml and are just as easy to coil as the Hurricane. Have very good airflow as well.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I'm going shopping at Fasttech...again!

My pleasure.

I REALLY LOVE my Goblin Mini and Kayfun Lite Plus.

You can build a KFL+ NANO for $10-11 and maybe less and get a GMini clone for about the same.

The easiest way to get a KFL+ Nano going is pick a bell cap kit and match it with a KFL+base..

The Bell cap kit comes with the Bell cap, Nano chimney, and Kayfun barrel.

Before you buy, check out https://www.vaporrange.com/login.asp. They have all sorts of RTA/RDA on sale at some of the lowest prices I've seen. I bought three Kayfun 4's for $9.99 each in the factory box with all the accessories. They have a page full of Tobeco RTAs and they carry EHPro, Infinite, and Hcigar, also.

I tried infinite and ehpro kfl + both where ok but I found subtank with a Rebuildable deck around 1.2 much more enjoyable.

I have a clone of the kfl+ not sure who made it. I like mine at .9-1 ohm. On my Goblin Mini I run it at .75-.9 but it is using thicker wire 26 gauge 28 gauge on my Kayfun Lite Plus
