It could be a number of things. My bet is airflow. Make sure to line up the airflow hole in the top cap exactly on the coil. Even a fraction can make a difference. When you look through the airhole, you should see your coil slap bang in the middle of it.

If that doesn't fix the issue, try adjusting your wicking. Making sure you do not pack it in too tight and choke it is another common issue.

Hot spots, jumbled coil, tight wick, too high nic, airflow, etc...lots of possible problems with this build.

What did you wrap that coil around? What did you use as a mandrel? I'm asking, because it's a very sloppy coil, and upon magnifying the picture, it looks as if you have overlapping coils...which is no bueno. Find yourself a 2.5mm or so diameter drill or screwdriver, and practice wrapping coils on it, or get yourself a Kuro Coiler, or other coil wrapping jig.

I'd say not enough cotton, it looks like you can see a gap above the cotton and below the top of the coil.
Or hot legs as others have said.

^^^^^^^
I was looking at that too, though I can't see it so good; if the diameter of the coil is too big, when the cotton gets wet, the cotton tends to sink down like a wet cloth, and when you fire the coil, the top of the coil gets dry and overheats.

Thanks for all the replies, yea I know thats an ugly coil but it seemed to fire up well when I dry burned.I just got the Kuro jig in my vapemail yesterday so I will practice more.I used a 1/8 drill bit and the KGD pads which are sort of hard to work with.I am going to try the cotton ball thing .Should I try for a little higher resistance on my next coil?

Again, thanks for the help!

The IGO-W was my first dripper. I found that I had to drill out the stock airholes in the cap as the airflow was too restrictive and caused a dry burnt hit. Find someone with a drill press. I drilled mine out to 2 mm. Now it vapes like a charm.

Inexpensive Mechanical Mod and RDA

18 - 24 mg nic is VERY HIGH for use in a dripper. Most people drop down to 3 - 6 mg nic when dripping.

Okay, I've built my fist coil on a IGO W and am getting nasty hot hits and little vapor.I used 28 g kanthal and the cotton .... pads.It comes in right at 1.5 ohms.Tried different juices and all pretty much taste the same.Nic levels are 18-24.What am i missing here?

1/8" should be good.
28 gauge takes about 10 watts per ohm, so unless you got something that can put out the power, I wouldn't try for higher resistance.

The coil needs to be directly in the path of the airflow.

I disagree with torching the kanthal first. I used to do it, but found it was an unnecessary step in coil building. Wrap the coil, remove from mandrel, hold with small needle nose pliers or thick tweezers and torch it then.

Now that I'm on to bigger and better coils, I rarely torch after wrapping. I just put it on the RDA and dry fire, then adjust until if meets my needs and wants.

Just my $0.02...for what it's worth.
