Hi,

Well, first of all, I'm new to the ecig world and to this forum! :)

I ordered an eVic that come with a 18650 unprotected battery. I read somewhere that it's because the eVic is going to protect it, and I'm totally fine with this.

Now I'm thinking about ordering a innokin Cool Fire I with an Efest IMR18350 800mah with I think is a protected battery.

My first concern is that the unprotected battery is going to explode while I'm charging it... I always got bad luck with everything that runs on electricity :)
Also, why they don't always use protected batteries? And can I put a protected one in the eVic?

I have no rechargeable batteries at home, so no charger... which brand/model do you recommend?

Thanks for your time ;)

It's always best to use a reputable IMR battery over an ICR. IMR batteries don't explode, only vent. A regulated device is fine to run an ICR on. I use Efest's 18650s.

Thanks Feraloxide for your reply.

I can buy an Efest IMR18650 2000 mAh for 6$ or a Efest IMR18650 Japanese 2250 mAh for 10$, I'm guessing it doesn't really matter?
Do you thing the Samsung battery is an IMR? They don't provide that much details in the product description. :S

EDIt to include an answer for Myah_June2014:
I read it, but I feel much more safer asking it haha, I hate fires and I don't want that thing to explode in my face or near my cat's bed. :) Sorry for the trouble

you can totally use a protected battery in the eVic. Most people these days are using IMR batteries, which are chemically safe, so they don't have a safety circuit. As for chargers, the nitecore ones are really nice, and you can get them with free shipping on amazon if you have a prime account. Avoid the trustfire chargers. Other than that Pila is good, so is 4sevens.

Thanks for dropping by imsoenthused.
I'm just gonna buy a bunch of IMR from Efest then ;) And I saw the Nitecore Intellicharger i4 V2 charger on Canvape, I think it will be the one. Nitecore suggest to charge 2 batteries minimum to avoid fast-charging a single battery (750mah recharge rate is pretty intense), So I need 3 batteries, so while 2 are charging, I have the third one to use hehe.

Thanks for your advise !

If the device can fit and operate protected batteries, why not use them?
In the long run it pays to buy the more expensive batteries. (protected or unprotected)
The tend to last longer, really provide the mah they say the do and can be charged and discharged as specified.
Don't buy the $2 chinese ... batteries. They hardly ever deliver what they are specified for.

You don't need a protected battery for any set up, use AW IMR batteries and you can't go wrong. If you are extra cautious you can get a fuse that'll trip the circuit in your mod if you have a short, but it's really not necessary Vapesafe Fuse

If you ever run coils below 1ohm then get sony VTC5s

Anything other then the above batteries is 2nd best regardless of what anyone says, they are the best in terms of reliability, the internal chemistry safety, the internal resistance, the battery life before needing a charge, and the battery life before needing replacing. a little research into this will prove it.

Make sure your supplier is a reputable one, even if it means paying an extra few $ at least you know you're getting an authentic high quality product for your money.

The chance of a catastrophe when charging batteries will be tiny if your using good batteries, AND a good charger. Go for anything Nitecore, Nitecore D4 if you want the absolute best. With the right batteries and charger what's the chance of the battery exploding while on charge? I'd imagine about the same likeliness as your laptop exploding while on charge.

Go cheap on mods if you want, go cheap on tanks if you want, but don't ever go cheap on batteries OR the battery charger (the good ones aren't ridiculously expensive anyway and will last you a long time), one of the best bits advice i was ever given as a newbie.

I like that one, I'll remember that if I ever get afraid
