Noob to Vaping. General questions.

Hi there guys. I'm new to vaping and my lovely wife, in an attempt to help me quit smoking Marlboro Lights for over 17 years, bought me a pretty nice setup from one of her friends. She got me eGo-C Upgrade battery with an iClear 16 chamber and atomizer. It's cool because it doesn't take up too much room in the pocket and holds a decent charge so far. I'm using Ritchy Liqua Bright Tobacco flavored juice, but sometimes the first few draws are killing my throat. I thought it would be less harsh than smoking a regular cig!

My questions: Is there any vids or suggestions you guys might have on cleaning and maintaining my setup? Any recommendations on juice that might be less, throaty? (I've tried diluting with trace amounts of distilled water, to no avail.) The setup leaks a little bit on occasion, any tips to prevent it?

Thank you all and I hope I can learn and some day contribute to the community!

Hi and welcome. I don't use tobacco juices but there are many many vendors out there making them. I would strongly suggest picking up sample packs from lots of different places (and samplers of non tobacco ones as well). It isn't unusual for someone who thinks they only want tobacco juice to discover they really prefer fruit or dessert or a mix of juices. Finding the right juice is often the tough part of becoming a vaper. :)

I am hoping someone who is familiar with the iClear can hop in and help with that one. I really know nothing specific to it. I use CE5 clearos and the Kanger protank. Both of what I use can be disassembled and soaked in hot water or vodka to clean them.

The iclear is basically similar enough to the CE5 that you'd be spot on, you can take them apart and clean them just the same. I used to disassemble my vivi novas and just rinse them off with hot water (make sure to dry them really well afterwards!) until I started rebuilding them, then ditching them completely.

The trick is to not inhale from it like a cigarette, I always tell people to draw into your mouth first, then inhale the vapor. There is a good metaphor for it, but I won't post it here ;)

For your liquid the nicotine lever and the % of PG can both make it a bit harsh. Do you know what levels your liquid has?. You may consider lowering both mainly the PG if you feel you are at the proper nic level for you. You can order liquids from many vendors who will allow you to customize the mix to your exact needs. Welcome to the forum. Stick around and keep reading and reading and reading some more. You will master the perfect vape in no time.

Sounds like you need a different juice. That juice from what I can tell from google is 80%pg and 20%vg. In my experience the higher the nicotine and pg the harsher or more throat hit you will get. I personly usually like no more then 50%-60%pg. There are other members who have been using tobacco juices longer then I have but I can tell you some of my favorite tobacco vendors. Mountain Oak Vapor, the Vapor Station, Halo, Backwoods Brew to name a few. Order some small size samples from a few different vendors to see what you like. There is a link at the top of the page "forum supplier list" with lots of reputable vendors. The juice is everything and will make or break the deal. I'm always on the hunt for better. lol It's a hobby now. ;) good luck and welcome to ECF!

Yeah.. I would try some 50/50 PG/VG ratio if you can. Harshness just ruins the pleasure of vaping. If you want to fix it up till you get some new liquid you could go to wal mart and get some glycerin USP (VG) and add some of it to your liquid to smooth it down a bit. It will also lower the nic and flavor a bit though. It was a good fast fix for me when I first started.

New vapors frequently complain of the vapor being harsh compared to smoking. This is considered to be quite normal. It took your body some time to tolerate smoking, it can take your body some time to adjust to vapor.

Vaping techique may be different from the way you smoked a cigarette. The proper way to vape is a gentle, consistant, deliberate draw of 3 - 6 seconds into the mouth before inhaling. Think sucking on a straw that is in a thick milkshake. This techique will allow the warm vapor some time to cool down before it hits your throat and lungs.

Some vapors prefer a cooler vape experience. To acheive this, raising the resistance (ohm rating) of your juice delivery device can work wonders. This will cool down the vapor. Also if your delivery device is a "top coil" it will be making a warmer vape; switching to a bottom coil device will cool the vapor down.

"Throat hit" is chiefly obtained by the nicotine strength in the e-liquid, and less so with the percentage of Pg in the pg/vg ratio. Lowering the Pg and increasing the Vg may allow for a smoother vape.

I can recommend using a medium level of nicotene in your eliquid, perhaps 15 or 16 mg.

I would next suggest using a NET tobacco eliquid if you are trying to replicate the taste and smokiness of a cigarette.

I make my own eliquids but I do buy a good NET tobacco eliquid once in a blue moon to vape with morning coffee.

I suggest "B.O.M.B" (blue organic mild base) net tobacco by Cravin Vapes.....50/50 mix in 16 mg

Don't have specific stuff on the iClear but there are truckloads of vaper videos on YouTube. I made a bee line to them when I started playing with clearos. Bucketloads of how-to videos. I just tried a search for "iClear clearomizer" and there are tons of 'em. Also, funny thing, a Google search nets you bunches of links to here on ECF but grouped all together by the subject you're searching for. Seems to work a bit better than the search feature of the forum software oddly enough. I swear, this place is a big encyclopedia. :)

On juices, hard to say exactly but I can think of a couple of things. A nicotine level that's a bit too high for you can "burn" your tongue, roof of your mouth, throat, you name it. I was a heavy smoker so I picked 24mg (2.4%) to start off with as that seemed what folks considered to be about the "heavy smoker" level. And it was fine most times until I ran into this really tasty juice and went just a tad overboard. Woof. Ended up with a burning tongue sensation, sore throat. It was... fun.

The nicotine absorption of vaping is different than cigs somewhat and I suspect our habits shift around when we switch to try to maintain the level of the nicotine we're used to. That can mean different things to different people. For me, it can mean frequent (if not "chain") vaping at times.

So I got some liquids that are 12mg (or 1.2% as some vendors will mark it) and often use those times I know I'm prone to vaping frequently (often without being all that conscious of doing it... like when I smoked).

Other thing is the PG/VG ratio. At the risk of repeating something you already know, PG and VG are the two main "base liquids" used to make e-liquids (there's actually a third out there but I've only seen it once myself). You can get 100% of one or the other but mixes of the two are probably the most common liquids.

PG is known for delivering "throat hit" and many say more flavor (doesn't seem to work that way for me though) while VG is known for more vapor and what I would call "smoother" vaping? Lots of subjective, personal taste in this. See if the bottle of your liquid has the PG/VG ratio on it (they all should but I dunno). I did a quick Google and see 70/30 and 80/20 were common (that's PG/VG by the way, usually it's done PG first). I can't handle 80/20s myself. In fact, the taste seems weird to me. Could be me. Everybody's different.

I seem to have settled in at 50/50 PG/VG or 100% VG. Seem to have less trouble with throat irritation and such. Also, I like lotsa vapor. :)
