First of all, I'd be remiss if I didn't try to talk you out of prefilled cartridges; these things are notoriously foul, filled with substandard juice then left to cook for months in warehouses and on cargo ships steaming from China to the Port of LA.

A 510 with manual batteries is always a good, basic starter. You can get a kit here for $34.95, and the shipping is free: https://strictlyejuice.com/index.ph...ducts_id=206&zenid=e9vb6qn64ibp1uds3kfbas5th0. Use their discount code (10percent), and it's down to $31.46--and that leaves you the better part of twenty bucks in your budget to check out some of their juice; you could check out several of their flavors in 3ml sizes, which would open your eyes to what a good ejuice is supposed to taste like.

Yeah, best thing to know first and foremost is the model - not the brand. Most mass marketed models are the E9 it seems. Pretty marginal. What brand did you buy? It may be possible to figure out what you bought.

Much of the conversation of what is a "good" model will depend on how many you smoke. If you smoke more than 1 pack a day, the eGO is by far best.

If you are a light smoker, then more difficult question to answer.

Refilling is very easy. I'd remove the original filler material (that's also substandard, what a surprise) and replace it with very cheap pre-cut blue foam: https://strictlyejuice.com/index.ph...ducts_id=222&zenid=e9vb6qn64ibp1uds3kfbas5th0.

Then its just a matter of refilling, as shown:

There's another possibility, but only if you can wait a couple of weeks: Liberty Flights sells their Riva kits for $29.99, which is absurdly low (they're generally over $50 otherwise). Rivas are eGo clones with 750mAh batteries that'll last 3 or 4 times as long as a standard 510 battery. They're out of stock at the moment, but I have it on good authority they'll have more in by the end of the month, at least: Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510

I bought a 510 kit from StrictlyEJuice for $35 (linked to by PoliticallyIncorrect) and I'm thrilled with it. I think the carts are filled with something other than the USA Mix (Marlboro) they claim, and I kinda hated it, but otherwise I was thrilled with the whole experience... product quality, shipping time, etc.

And don't bother with pre-filled carts. It's more predictable and more fun to just fill your own. Not to mention ridiculously cheaper.

By the way, you never know how long your cheapie first e-cig will last. Hang onto it. I've been surprised by the utility of several of my backups.

BTW, the estimable MistressNomad has posted some videos for newbies that are great. See the stickies in the New Members Forum.

I have a 650mAH ego and the battery lasts me 12 hours. I practically breathe through the thing all day so I think the actual time of use is a bit better than that. Either 510 or riva are a good plan. Really though what's the price of your health. I know about being broke but a bit of an investment now could save your life.

Get some blank carts (in addition to the prefilled ones that come with it, and I recommend you NOT think of that as how they "should" taste), and plenty of juice. Get it in small bottles, in several different flavors... and better to err on the strong side than the weak. If you can add in some plain PG or VG with your order, then you can thin out the juice if it's too overpowering.

Smaller bottles might be a tad more expensive, but they're better than being stuck with 20+ ml of something you hate. Plus, you'll get an idea of how good vaping can taste... DON'T get all tobacco flavors, please! Get at least half in other ones...

I'd also suggest at least 30ml total juice with your first order... that should give you enough to last you until you can find ones you like, order them, and get them in the mail before you totally run out :) There's nothing worse than deciding you're not ever going back to analogs, and then running out of juice!!
