Ok you guys can stop with the pipe tobacco talk before I think I have to go buy a pipe and tobacco. At first I wasn't sure about snus and then jumped in with both feet. Then I think I was one of the last ones to try snuff and now use that regularly. The pipe thing is already starting to sound good. Gotta learn to control myself. Right?
Right.... sure thing.... yep.... oky doky.... CONTROL MYSELF.... Got that one.... yep.... MUST CONTROL MYSELF.... MUST CONTROL MYSELF..... MUST CONTROL MYSELF....... MUST CONTROL MYSELF

It's not working :vapor:

    Hittman....
I dove head first into pipe smoking first in a search to get away from Cigarettes...it cut my habit in half.
So if Pipes,do get interesting to you, a small trade of Snus maybe a great trade for us both...While I await my Northern order...:toast:
Pipe smoking to me is the most relaxing use of tobacco......

I've never tried it, but I've heard good things about it. I've been thinking about getting a corncob for a relaxing evening thing when I don't want to pop in a snus before bed.

Any advice on a good beginners pipe tobacco?

Carter Hall or Prince Albert would be as good a place as any to start. You should be able to find someplace local that carries then. Both are Burley type tobaccos that are easy to pack and smoke. Also not to much in the way of tongue bite.

Thanks for the offer tattooer. I am still considering it but have not decided. I am not sure when you placed the northerner order but it seems their shipping time has gotten quicker since they started using UPS. I would think it should not take very long to get your order.

That's very good advice on beginner's tobacco. I could not do without my pipes now. I do two a day -- mid-morning and sunset. Very pleasant way to pass about 45 minutes.

Carter Hall is one of the few I've found that doesn't bite the tongue. Believe me when I say that a burned mouth will send anyone back to cigarettes, which do not burn the mouth. So go easy on the choice of pipe tobacco. No Virginias or English blends for awhile. Pure aromatics are sticky messes, so start with a mild burley.

Prince Albert is a mild burley like Carter Hall, but I like Carter Hall's taste a bit better. Captain Black has its fans, as does Kentucky Club and Half&Half. These are derogatorily called drugstore tobaccos, which means they're available anywhere. That's a very good thing with all the restrictions crashing down on us.

If you do order online .. I like Just for Him, and order Whiskey Biscuit Gravy or Shortcut to Mushrooms. These taste better than any drugstore tobacco, and are only a little bit more expensive. They are secret recipes but seem to be latakia and black/vanilla cavendish. I was smoking some the other day outside a local Goodwill and a passing woman froze in mid-step as she passed. I expected a tirade. "That smells soooo good," she said, and smiled at me.

Actually, that happens a lot when puff outside a Cracker Barrell or some other public place.

TBob, you've really got me wondering about where my old pipe is. When i was in college my roommate at the time and I got into the habit of a pipe after dinner most evenings and I really did enjoy it, even though I'm sure we were using the cheapest of the cheap tobacco at the time. Boy did we think we were something with our pipes and $10 scotch! I just don't know that I've got the self control to stop at the pipe, so for the time being, I guess I'd better leave it buried in some box stacked in the attic. You brought back some great memories, though! :)

Glad to bring back memories. I, too, first took up pipe smoking while in college. Cherry Blend. Mixture 79. Sail. Maple&Rum. Sugar Barrell. I was Hugh Hefner back then!

We had Chianti, not scotch. :)

In one important way, pipe smoking is not at all like e-smoking. A pipe is "sipped". Tiny, tiny puffs keep the fire going in a pipe. A user NEVER, ever, NEVER sucks a pipe! Nor does that smoker ever inhale the smoke. Sip, exhale.

With an e-cig, a user has to turn his/her face inside out and suck for 3 to 5 seconds to get anything at all. The vapor is then inhaled. I really have disliked this fact of life since I began e-smoking in January 2008. E-smoking is not like cigarette smoking -- or any OTHER smoking, in fact. Nothing else forces us into competitions of how long we can continuously suck a metal stick.

And there is no liquid flavor that matches the exquisite taste and aroma of fine pipe tobacco. Pipe smoking is my "me happy time." A time to reflect. To taste. To enjoy what I'm doing.

E-smoking, much like cigarette smoking, is far more convenient. I eventually became a cigarette smoker because pipes took too much time and required learned skills. Now, I have time. I have the skills. And I enjoy my tobacco in a (relatively) harmless use.
