When I respond to a private message and send it, I check the sent messages folder and it shows that nothing was sent. Shoudnt it being showing a message as sent?

Click on 'settings' (upper right corner of the page)
Click on 'General Settings' Under 'My Account' (look down the side of the page for the menu option)
About half way down the page you will see a section for Private Messaging you want to select "Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default"
Then you should be good to go
