Something really, really bad has to happen to cause a li-on battery explode. Let me put it this way: How long have you had a cell phone? Digital camera? Digital camcorder? iPod? Lap top? Chances are better than 99% they have li-on batteries. Any of them exploded?

If it was common with eGo batteries there wouldn't be any eGo batteries. If you have seen anyone reporting an eGo problem can you please post a link? I would like to see it.

Seven months, four geniune JoyeTech eGo batteries, not even a hint of them getting warm in use or while charging.

I've been using mine for well over a year and a half with no issues. I'm not 100% sure those are the types of batteries that are exploding. I don't know much about batteries, but I think they're talking about unprotected mod batteries. The VV boxmod I have takes 14500 batts, and I was told very specifically not to get the unprotected ones. I'm guessing if you have your battery contained, like in a manufactured ego battery base, then you should be ok. The exploding thing is more for people who want to save a few dollars with the batts they put into their mods, I think. Hopefully someone more with more understanding of this will come along to reassure you, but i've never heard of an ego batt esploding'. Hope that helps!

I guess a little addition here would be beneficial -

Sure enough. Li-on batteries can fail while charging. Several people have reported such failures with ego, ego clones, and mod batteries here on ECF and many have posted pictures. IMR batteries can also have catastrophic failures while charging, or discharging, or if shorted even though they are safe chem. Ni-mh batteries can fail - lead acid batteries can fail - capacitors of all sorts can explode.... Use precautions when charging and use common sense when transporting, storing, or using batteries.

Here's the link to the post about an exploding eGo battery.

...virtually all reports I have seen of catastrophic failure of an ego batt had to do with CHARGING...usually a failure of the charger to quit charging and the resultant overheating of the batt...I don't know of any failures while using...there are reports of the switch not shutting off(light stays on), this could result in a big time fail if not noticed and the atty/carto not being removed to shut off current flow...............

Batteries should never be left unattended while charging. There's probably a lot of folks who charge their batteries over night while they sleep.
That is not a good practice.

I have one Ego battery that kept charging, past it's normal 45 minutes or so, for 90 minutes. When I checked it, it was very warm. I disconnected it from the charger and let it cool down. It worked fine and the next day it charged normally and I haven't had any problems with it since.

If I had let it continue to charge......no telling what would have happened. Maybe nothing. Maybe a fire. Maybe a ruined battery.

But that's why you shouldn't charge batteries over night while you sleep.

I was riding in a car one day w/the driver from Toyota dealership. His cell phone was in his pants pocket. All of a sudden his leg started getting warm, by the time he got it out it had burned his leg.

Another friend said his cell phone got hot when talking a couple minutes, I tried it out and damn near burned my cheek. Both were faulty IMO - then again they said the Titanic wouldn't sink too.

All batteries should be handled w/respect. I would never charge a battery - be it cell phone, lap top or e-cig mod when not in attendance. Ive seen an automatic Smoketip battery come on when attaching the filter.

To end this story - I myself have experienced a thermal runaway in a mod. - Switch was apparently stuck on. Did that keep me from vaping - no. I remove all batteries from mods when I'm not using them and only use all mechanical mods now. I still remove the batteries for just in case.

To add to a previous post, it is usually a faulty charger situation. Follow suggestions and common sense and you have no worries...if a charger is acting funny (not turning off, taking crazy hours to charge, etc) save the worry, spend the $5 and replace the charger. There are millions of these lithium batts in use and these failures are a crazy tiny percentage.

If you are really worried, here is peace of mind for $1.99... HobbyKing R/C Hobby Store : Lithium Polymer Charge Pack 18x22cm Sack

ugh...

I hate reading about this stuff...now every time I go to charge my batts or take a higher wattage hit in the next couple of days, I'm gonna get all anxious : (

I know that feeling . . . I sometimes feel like I'm putting a pipe-bomb to my mouth while using my Silver Bullet with stacked batteries. I'm sure nothing will happen but it still makes me a tad nervous.
