Golly gee, and it just so happens that every single one of those patients, especially during that time frame of hate campaigning, were treated by "then quit smoking". " here's some Chantix" "here's some added stress for your mind and body" "here's some gum, which doesn't work, but does cause extra financial & emotional stress" ... etc.
The more they stress ya out, the more likely ya become sicker than a dog. Imagine that.

Continuing on instead of editing:
Stress kills. Stress weakens the immunity system.
Smokers lose apartmentsts, jobs, healthcare, Liberty, automonony, money, ... and proper nourishment if they have to make a financial choice between smokes and a 10 buck orange.
Smokers are constantly belittled, blamed, shamed, and overall abused, verbally.
Smokers are told their symptoms are from smoking, without much further ado. No treatment until they quit.
Smokers are constantly told they're going to catch cancer.
Smokers are constantly being bombarded with the word "cancer, cancer, cancer, cancer, cancer...."

Health nuts are dropping dead from jogging on the streets. Between breathing in the exhausts of every known substance except smoking. They constantly chant to themselves.... "You're gonna catch cancer if you don't exercise more". "You're gonna get cancer if you don't eat right". "Cancer, cancer, cancer, cancer, cancer..."

its ts a brainwashing game, not a lifestyle game.
Stop stressing.

From the article:

The study was observational, meaning that it looked at people’s habits, like smoking, and noted statistical correlations between their behavior and their health. Correlation does not prove a cause-and-effect relationship, so this kind of research is not considered as strong as experiments in which participants are assigned at random to treatments or placebos and then compared. But people cannot ethically be instructed to smoke for a study, so a lot of the data on smoking’s effects on people comes from observational studies.

*Bold emphasis mine.

Think this (correlation) can't or won't be done with vaping? This is the epitome of the scientific data on smoking deaths.

No one is going to argue that smoking is harmless, just as no one ought to be arguing that vaping is harmless. But in this area of science, where skepticism seems entirely lost or for sure under reported, it routinely appears as if correlation equals causation. Not inferred, but known or deemed well established. As stated in closing paragraph of the article:

The diseases that had previously been established by the surgeon general as caused by smoking were cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, pancreas, larynx, lung, bladder, kidney, cervix, lip and oral cavity; acute myeloid leukemia; diabetes; heart disease; stroke; atherosclerosis; aortic aneurysm; other artery diseases; chronic lung disease; pneumonia; influenza; and tuberculosis.

Huh. And here I always thought pneumonia, influenza, and tuberculosis were caused by viruses and bacterias?
First came the studies about influenza killing people (but not enough of them apparently) Influenza Causes Deaths From Heart and Respiratory Disease
Next came the huge push to force smokers out into the weather.
Now we have huge demonizing campaign against The safer alternatives like vaping.

Golly gee, I don't even need an imagination to see this outline played out...
