Dohsma's wife, Christie, reminded me of this once in lifetime event. Venus is traveling pass the Sun tonight and it will appear as a black dot passing over the sun. It's starting for us at 5:05pm. Check this link to see when you can check it out.

Note: Do not stare directly into the sun while watching as it may cause permanent eye damage.

Just a reminder. The next time this is happening is in 2117.

Wow thanks! My family is now planning to check it out .. I'm trying to remember, there was something we made in grade school to let is safely observe stuff like this.. some kind of shadow box or something... Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I'll have to get off my lazy .... and google it. I was hoping I wasn't confusing it with the shoebox photography thing.

Edit: Just researched it. I'm going to try mounting binocs on a tripod , covering one lens and focusing other onto cardboard; seems like best way to do it if you don't have access to a 6 foot long box (or high end observation equipment)

We built an apparatus, but I couldn't get a good pic of the actual event, sorry. We did get to see it though, and it was really cool. We drew a circle around it where we first spotted it, then watched it 'move' out of the circle and keep cruising in front of the sun.. Too cool!

Here's a pic of our setup:
