I know this is a late response, but most offshore rigs have a smoking room or a smoking area. I've never had a problem taking my ecig offshore. Though in my line of work there are times where I can't use the lithium ion batteries. In this case, I use a USB pass thru from my laptop. but there are some other issues...

The issue on many rigs is a matter of testing. any electrical device coming or going from the rig must be tested as "safe" for flammable gas areas etc... so just show the testing guy your kit and he'll give it a once over with a few meters and such. then you should be good to go...

Norway is SUPER restrictive, some rigs will not allow any personal electronics beyond maybe an iPod. no cameras, no lighters, no cell phones...it really just depends on the rig supervisor, and the regional regulations.

My suggestion is take a small ego kit, and if they wont approve it, it'll be held in a locker until you depart.
