It's a bad ohm reader, don't trust it.

I've heard pretty good things about the Smoktech Ohm Reader, but I haven't tried it myself. I use my MVP and my IPV3 to read the ohms of my coils (all the ohm readers I've had don't compare to the MVP2). I don't usually go super-sub-ohm though, I try to stay in the .3-1 ohm range.

Also I'm notorious for going a LONG time before rebuilding my coils. When I make a build I like, I stick to it for a long, long time (oldest coil I have is probably 9 months, after a quick rinse and rub it looks brand new). It guarantees reliability for me (I know what ohm to expect all the time), I could care less about a "clapton coil" or "Hendrix coil" or whatever. If I can achieve "it tastes nice" with some simple micro/macro coils, that's all I need. [/rant]

Although, I do wanna try out some of that twisted kanthal.
Ok, sucks to hear as I just bought it. A little bumed. Just spent like 200 bucks on all this fulff/ wire/wick/torch/reader.Gp Spheroid shipping all this stuff and it seems my 20 dollar mini nautlis is performs better and is easy as pie to use. I got the coil part down pretty good, they look nice and burn perfectly. Now I am having whicking issues with this thing. lol. kill me.

Heres a video tutorial review on the GP Spheroid RBA that may help you figure that complicated device out.
To me that particular rta will have a few areas you'll need to learn and practice before you get in dialed in and working to your satisfaction. Wicking with any build it yourself rba can take a few tries to get right at first. However, wicking on an RTA like the GP Spheroid is a whole different ball game. I dont have one, but it seems like kind of a hybrid between a dripper and a carto.

Anyway, maybe this vid will help you learn its ups and downs.

On your other question...
PS: Can a short destroy a regulated mod? If so, I am afraid to even try this anymore. If the meter isn't going to tell me if theres a short than how will I know im not about to destroy my mod?

On a regulated mod, if the resistance is too low, or a short, the mods circuitry should see that and refuse to fire it.
In other words, the regulated mods built in safety features should prevent a short from frying the board

hth.
