We've all been cautioned about using anything with oil or sugar to prolong the life of our attys.

Someone posted that they get a great throat hit with Ice 101, a high proof (101) peppermint schnapps, which contains sugar.

I'm wondering if the alcohol content doesn't negate the effect of the sugar somewhat.

Same thing with oil. I would like to try using anise extract and it has oil and alcohol. If I mixed anise and Everclear (or high proof vodka) in the liquid, doesn't the alcohol help keep the atty clean?

Some of the liquids sold by vendors taste like they have some kind of sweetner in them. Do we know what they use to accomplish the sweeter tastes? - or maybe that's a trade secret....:p

Take a look at these first two links on the idea of exactly how much 'oil' would be in a mixture basically.... your choice, obviously, but I've made some mixtures that have worked. If I'm using an oil based flavor, my 'sample' will be larger than most samples - ie. 3ml instead of a 1ml for 'testing' so the possibility of throwing out more juice exists if you don't get it right. The following links are from the one post which further explains how certain extracts are 'safer' in terms of water solubility.

....have a water soluble anise that I've used to try to duplicate DV's absinthe and it tastes pretty good. If you're into that do a wiki search on absinthe to nail down some of the other flavors/herbs - anise, star anise, fennel - all very similiar but still different - lemon balm(some citrus but don't use lorann's 'lemonade' - one drop will ruin a batch up to 3mls :) hyssop? and a bunch of others - I spent a few hours tracking down hints. I also have a brewhaus order for the stuff just to see how that works. I'm not sure of the ingredients but it was like $6 for both the absinthe and wormwood extracts.

I'm not saying this is the right way to do things, it's just the way I do it. I have made juice using all the flavors that you can get from LorAnn's. So far the only one I have had problems with is the Kona coffee flavoring. The ones with oil have not had any adverse effect on my attys, so far but the Kona quickly turned into a burnt flavor that caused me to have to clean my atty. That is the only one I won't use anymore.
