On your Provari, do you prefer a sleeve, wrap, case or nothing?

It's really going to depend on the weight of the leather, which I won't be sure of until it gets here next week.

With the Serenity sleeves it looks as if he may glue them rather than sewing, and rounds/smooths the edges. Unless there are actually tiny stitches in the channels at the top and bottom, then he just runs a tool across those areas, either for decoration, to get the slight flare, or it's caused by tool that does the rounding. The holes for the joining stitches are either poked through with a punch and then threaded, or stitched with a sewing awl.

With a lighter weight leather, like kidskin, you can actually run it through the sewing machine. You just need a nylon foot, since metal sticks on leather, and a leather needle for your machine.

There is stitching vertically on one side that attaches the edges, but the little horizontal "channels" along the top and bottom aren't stitched.

These are a couple of things I pulled from my correspondence with Tim when I was designing my custom sleeve:

The actual length of the stitching would depend on which size of sleeve you wanted, but it runs form very near the top to very near the bottom. About 3 1/2" for the ProVari Mini with standard cap.

The leathers that I use vary quite a bit in thickness but are typically in the 4-7oz range for sleeves. For a ProVari Mini with standard cap, the average size for the sleeve is about 3 1/4" wide by 3 1/2" tall, depending on the exact piece of leather I select.

I have a sewing machine... darned if I remember how to use it tho...

I'd have to do it by hand, and a case is so small, how much sewing would there be anyway? This is a project for later, I am not at all set up to sew things (nor ever been any good at sewing). But what a great idea and a great way to reuse old nice leather!!!! I'm looking forward to seeing what you make Stormfinch!

Lol I have to remind myself how the whole sewing machine works each time I set it up. Turns out not everything is like riding a bike.

Really the only sewing you would need to do on light leather would be to hem the edges and maybe reinforce the openings for the button and window, since it doesn't hold it's shape on it's own and tends to be somewhat stretchy. Heavier weight leather wouldn't need either.

I'll be curious as to how this particular project turns out. It's been so long since I've done anything crafty that it could be a complete disaster, or I could surprise myself. :)

Thanks Ocey, all good info! I was wondering about the weight of the Serenity leather. If I calculated correctly the weight for what I picked up is around 2 1/2 ounces, so a little lighter than what Tim does, but it may be more around the weight that Parish uses.

I had asked him that because there are a lot of very cool types of designer leathers around that you can get inexpensive samples of. Most of the samples are about the right size to make sleeves out of, but unfortunately the ones I liked were too lightweight for Tim to use.

This was when I ordered my first one and hadn't seen his sleeves in person, so wasn't sure what to expect.

You know, this could be a great use for a ruined handbag too... like the leather on the body's near perfect, but the strap broke or stretched out? The weight of the leather on a nice leather handbag looks about how thick the serenity wrap is, if you take out the lining... or if you have an old worn plastic logo bag like LV, Gucci, Coach...

I was thinking about hand bags too, but I don't have any ruined ones around. It will give me something else to look for when I hit the thrift stores again.

I wonder if I could sneak one of wifey's purses away from her and send you some "samples"... lol!

Yeah, I've been married 20 years, I've learned you don't mess with the purse and you don't mess with the shoes!! Trust me on this one, put the purse down and walk away slowly!!!

So far, it's looking like the "naked" Provaris are the favorite (it's hard not to want to show them off), followed by a few sleeves and some wraps. I'm interested in the sleeves and wraps too, but I'll wait until I get mine to decide what to do (it's on it's way now......yay). Thanks for your responses, everyone!
