One of many attempts at Micro Coil, thoughts?

Heya,

Been wrapping only around a month now. I feel I've gotten it down pretty good, but honestly have nothing to compare it to. I'm also inquiring here because I have an issue with these micro coils I build. They seem to heat up very slowly. Is that normal? Also, I really notice no difference in flavor at all, but that could be due to the juice. Don't think I have vaper's tongue either. Just trying to bring the most flavor out of subtle flavored juices. (Or maybe they aren't that subtle and I'm doing something horribly wrong)

I only own an APV right now so my coils *must* be above 1.2Ω in order to fire. My eGo recently died so I'm looking into grabbing a decent mech and some more Panny CGR18650CHs.

I'm building on the Optimus S RDA. It's freaking tiny in case you didn't know. The coil I'm posting a picture of is not the current coil I'm using, but they are identical aside from amount of wraps.

28GA Kanthal, 3mm Ekowool, 10 wraps @1.7

The flavor isn't burnt, I'm quite careful to wrap as consistent and calculated as possible. No shorts what-so-ever. The flavor is just... hardly there. I do have this problem with most devices I use so I'm starting to wonder if it's just the juice, because my two most strongly flavored juices are VERY FLAVORFUL in exactly the same devices.

Any thoughts, tips, advice is appreciated. I'm mostly trying to figure out 1.) Why my micro coils heat so slowly, 2.) How to get the best flavor out of a micro coil. Thank You!

Also if anyone could post to the Micro Coil sub-forum/thread I'd really appreciate it, couldn't find it myself!

Vape well, vape often :vapor:

Your coil loops are too far apart. Try wrapping so they touch each other. Another trick is to wrap the coil, hold it compressed in a set of flat bladed tweezers, and heat it to dull red hot, then let it cool while still holding it compressed. It will retain the compressed, tight loop against loop, shape once it cools.

I'll find the tweezers in a second ...

here it is: $4.02 Gooi TS Series 6 Pieces Stainless Steel Tweezerses 6-pack - TS-10/11/12/13/14/15 at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

The fourth from the left with the rounded nose is the one to use. They are not high quality tweezers but they are perfect to abuse in the heat of the torch to adjust your coils.

Another issue you may be running into with slow heating is a wire too thick for your mod. Looks like an evic you're using?

Close! Smoktech SID. I've already considered getting some 30GA but my next wire purchase will be for Ribbon Kanthal. I plan to try this build and see how flavor improves for my PT2. Unless you think that wouldn't be successful, I'm open to suggestions.

Going to get an Igo-W ASAP as well. Really getting sick of this tiny RDA lol. It serves it's purpose, but only just.

@bsidb Thanks, I wasn't planning on trying that anyway haha! Will build a new coil and torch/compress to desired shape before ever hooking in the leads.

You PT rebuilt using 3 mm rope silica wick wrapped with 30 AWG wire powered by a VW mod will work about as well as a PT on a typical VW mod can. Give it a go and you may be pleasantly surprised at how well a PT can perform. I wrap a tightly compressed coil on a number 43 drill bit and then thread the 3mm wick into it. Works almost too well lol. Power input from about 11 to 13 watts is the sweet spot for that build for me.

Done and done!

Same coil, 28GA, 8 wraps. Came out to 1.5Ω, no shorts. Had to tighten the screws down extra hard but it was worth it. Best flavor I've gotten from this juice yet. It's much better on the inhale with a stronger exhale (and TH!). Delayed heating issue gone as well, starts steaming as soon as I hit the button.

Thanks Mad Scientist. I thought I studied enough videos online but was *definitely* doing it wrong. Going to rebuild a few PT heads the same way now haha. I could do better but this is a vast improvement.

Again, MUCH APPRECIATED. :toast:

I get much better flavor and TH from dual micro coils than the 28g build I also make. Use 34g wrapped 11x on a 18 ga needle. Wick them with cotton balls for the best flavor.
Maybe you could figure a way to incorporate the coils with a ecowool sheath over top the coils. Did one today with a vertical coil in a protank but the flavor was mute.
