So I bought a
Trustfire TR-001 charger for my efest Imr 18650's and yes I know its not the best charger and is cheap but I've heard good reviews to get the job done. Was wondering if it is normal to get hot (not to the point im going to burn myself but not just warm) and OK to let it still charge while on a safe surface if I continue to keep an eye on it and not leave the house while letting it continue to charge?

I used to use one of these all the time but it started to make a weird clicking noise. I use an Xtar WP6II now, and it is better in that it never makes a noise, nothing ever gets warm and the batteries always come off the charger at 4.2 (or so my Vamos tell me). I don't think the TR-001 is a bad charger but I'm glad that I replaced mine. Ymmv.

It's Ok for the batteries to get warm. There's some chemical magic going on inside the battery, and one of the outputs of a chemical reaction is heat. If they're getting HOT, it's a problem--the charger is doing something that it isn't supposed to be doing, and the battery is not going to like it.

It is NOT Ok for the charger to get warm. There have been problems with the TR-001, but a lot of people have used them without incident.

My TR-001 has been in near constant use for over 2 1/2 years. The only complaint I might have is that it puts out some Radio Frequency hash which manifests itself as noise in my amateur radio receiving equipment. Fortunately, that noise can be overcome and the level declines as the batteries become charged. There are lots of electric/electronic devices that create such RF noise.

It should not get the batteries or the charger hot. I have that same charger (it's a backup, now that I have a nitecore) and never had any issues with mine. I don't own any efest batteries but I have heard good things. Something is decidedly not right, and I would find another charger/return that one.

an electronic device gets warm, oh noes! Maybe your's has a capacitor with lower than ideal capacity making the whole thing work harder and waste more energy, as long as its within specification.. who cares. I had one of those a while ago and i did get rid of it but not because it was being warm but because it kept overcharging my batteries to 4.3v.

I knew a girl like that once.

I would be nervous about a battery getting overly warm too. Batteries get warm when you charge them, but if its warm enough that you felt compelled to ask about it, I would be worried and recommend getting a replacement. If the chemical reaction in the batteries get's to hot, the expansion will cause leakage and the leakage will cause damage.

A good site for chargers is RTD Vapor. In order of Quality/reputation, Pila, Xtar, both very good, Nitecore, Efest, good but not as, anything with fire in the name, might work, might burn. I've got the WP2 II, and 4 exrta spacers although today I'd get the WP2S, no need for spacers. If money is really tight there is the BR-103W from Madvapes, A good charger if a little slow. At $4.99 I've got 3 as back-ups and use one for over a year as my main without so much as a hiccup.
