Not all NET's gunk up coils/atomizer heads badly. IME, Heather's Heavenly Vapes, Mountain Oak Vapors, and Backwoods Brew's NET's have all been very clean and easy on coils. The only one I remember that was really bad was GoodEJuice, but I didn't like their flavors much anyway (except Patriot, which was actually the cleanest burning). In fact, I think the only times I've had issues with gunking is when the NET had a lot of added caramel flavoring and/or sweeteners.

That said, there are a lot of beginner friendly RBA's out there. The Kayfun-style would be a good option if you want a tank, but the IGO-L is also a good one to try (RDA). I wouldn't worry about the tightness of the cap, just make sure whatever you get has good reviews and phillips head screws in the posts. The Patriot RDA and IGO-W types are all dual coil, which means you'd want to cover one of the air inlet holes to run a single coil. Dual coils are great and all, but IMO they aren't that much better than a good single coil. Setup is only a little bit trickier, not really enough to be a concern over a single coil.

I would encourage you to try a regulated VV/VW mod before going straight to a mechanical. Read up on the differences to understand why (or why not).

I don't want to hijack this thread but I also don't want to start a new thread with questions that have been answered 1000 times.

I recently got 2 mods (nemesis and K101), a nimbus clone and a kayfun clone. The 2 RBAs came pre-coiled.

The Nimbus ohm'd out @ 0.9 and the Kayfun ohm'd out @ 2.1 (factory coils).

The Nimbus flavor and throat hit is so strong it is nearly unbearable - SUPER STRONG. The Kayfun is about the same, maybe ever so slightly weaker in flavor and softer on throat hit. The nimbus gets alot better when the coils are nearing drying out. The Kayfun is about 1/2 full of juice so no change there.

I am using an efest 18350 800 mah in the k100 and a efest 18650 2000 mah in the nemesis.

The flavors and throat hit a to strong. Did I get what I asked for trying these mods? I had been using a protank, vivanova clearomizers and more recently the coolfire 1 which all gave a more pleasurable experience. Should I rebuild these coils shooting for a much higher resistance (higher ohm)?

I am really looking forward to using and enjoying these mods but they have to be toned down alot and trying to figure out whats up.

Thanks for any help !

p.s. all the juice is between 50/50 - 80/20 and 12-18 mg nic.

Yeah, from my experience when I went to my first RBA(FT Cobra) the 18MG I was vaping pretty much had to be tossed out the window, I dropped to 8-12MG to ease the throat hit on factory coil(1.9). Built my own coil(1.0) and started mixing 0MG with my existing liquid to dumb them down, Now I have a mini dripper running .4 and AGA-T2 running .8 and am staying around 6MG.

The difference in nicotine is huge going from a carto/clearo to a rba or rda. I went from an 18mg/ml to a 6 instantly. Not to mention hotspots can make for a less than optimal vape. You tube is your friend on that. Another issue could be the premade coils. Every atty I have purchased has needed to have a through cleaning before use. If it came with a premade I toss that in the trash, disassemble and clean the system, dry and rebuild. Check ohms then work out hotspots. Every clone I have seen new has still had machining oils still on it, with the premade coils. I don't think vaping those oils is a good idea.
