Ordered some gear, looking for advice, battery safety worries

Hey ECF gang, I've ordered a "Smokjoy Nfire 50W Mini" and would like to know if anyone on here has experience with this device or other devices from this manufacturer. I'm so skeptical about battery safety after reading up on clones, bad bats and bad burns... I've ordered from a respectable e-cig store in Germany and I just hope it's not going to turn out being a sketchy clone...

I haven't heard of Smokjoy. I looked it up, and it looks pretty jazzy. I'd say give it a few pulse fires to test to see if the atty is firing up correctly. With a mod like that, they probably use a legitimate chip in it, but its probably just an older chip.
The main reason for batteries going up in smoke is lack of education and people not paying attention to what they are doing. If you are going to be using a tank, make sure its full before you do your pulses so you don't burn the wick.

Hi, and welcome to the board. I am not familiar with that mod, but it looks like a nice piece of gear. The SmokeJoy website informs me it has an internal 2400mAh battery, which I took to mean it is a non-replaceable LiPo battery pack. Frankly, LiPos are not quite as safe a battery chemistry as the removable IMR cells used in other mods. However, they can be and are safely used every day. If you have ordered the gear from a reputable shop, and it is as good quality as it appears, I think you'll do just fine with it.

Thanks very much for the easing words. I'm still awaiting it's arrival and will let you guys know what it's like as soon as I get it.

Do, please. It obviously has adjustable power levels. You don't say what tank or dripper you intend to use on it, but starting at low wattage and working up seems to be a good idea. And yes, do make sure the wick is completely soaked before firing it to avoid burning the wick and having to replace it. Most of the people who have gotten into trouble with LiPos have abused them. I don't use them, myself, but my reading indicates they are vulnerable to impact stress or punctures, things of that nature. It's possible to fry one in a cheap piece of gear, if the circuitry is poorly devised or implemented. I don't know that mod, as I said, but it doesn't look like a cheap one. The only price I have seen on one exceeded USD100. There are a lot of LiPo mods out there. The iStick 30 watt machine, for example, is produced in hundreds of thousands if not millions of copies and never a lick of trouble that I have heard. Conversely its big brother, the iStick 50, had some quality control issues when first manufactured and they had some problems in the beginning. The best advice I can give you is to pay attention to it until you are comfortable. Batteries tend to get hot before they do something really ugly. If the mod starts getting hot in your hand, that's when I'd start to worry about it.

I don't think it's so much when your using it you need to worry about as it is when your charging it, I would not leave it un attended while it's charging.

Scary as hell!! My criteria was to have a wood bodied mod, looked through some shops that were recommended to me that ship to Switzerland and found this really jazzy looking Smokjoy and went for it. Maybe I should of waited and asked for some advice on here first. I have some electrical engineer friends, would it be a possibility to take the bad boy apart and replace the batteries with something safer??

Im not sure that it would be advisable to do that. I guess its safer for an electrical engineer, but I still wouldnt. You can still use your device safely. Just make sure you read up on safety issues concerining the Smokjoy model that you have ordered, do your due dilligence to ensure that you are taking every safety precaution of which you are aware.

A Double E could do that, certainly. Depending on the size of the mod, it might or might not be possible to fit in a battery with safer chemistry. I wouldn't, if I were you. Read the manual, do as it says, don't charge it unattended, and don't worry about it unless it starts to get hot is my advice. If that still worries you, sell it unopened and buy a different mod. Right off the bat, I can't call to mind a regulated wood-bodied mod that uses IMR chemistry batteries, but I wouldn't be surprised if you could find one; I'm certain a custom mod maker could make one; and wood unregulated mods can be easily found. Bear in mind you hold your safety in your own hands with an unregulated mod, regardless of battery type.

Edit to my earlier: They make safe charging bags for LiPo batteries. They're made out of some kind of fire-proof material. You put the battery(ies) on the charger, and bung the charger, battery and all in the bag, sealing it for everything but the power cord coming out. Then put the bag on a fire proof surface like your stove top or in a metal or Pyrex casserole dish. That way, if they do burst into flame, it doesn't burn down the house. Just a thought...
