I've never had a "bad" taste from cotton, even the Japanese kind -- just sort of a cotton or T-shirt flavor. There is a slight break-in period with most wicking material, and, of course, some folks are more sensitive to it than others.

I still use Japanese cotton, just because I have so much of it, but for my Rebuildable tank Atomizers, I use cellucotton -- rayon. Much cleaner taste and wicks like a dream. If you haven't checked into it, you should try some out. More information is here:

Don't give up on rebuilding because of the wicking material. It saves money -- and who doesn't like to do that?

That nasty flavor happens if you're using too much cotton for wicking.

Amen. A little goes a long way. Pull your cotton apart to separate the fibers; putting it through the coil (back and forth)
in a loose fit. Depending on your VG/PG ratio, there's usually a 10-20 minute break-in period. Then it's just the flavor of your
liquid you should taste. With some of my thicker liquids (75+VG), I will vape a fresh build at 10-15 watts during break in. Then adjust
from there. Also, I've read that boiling cotton in an aluminum pan can add a bad taste. Have not experimented though.

Good questions - what cotton exactly are you using?
I am hooked on the Shiseido pads. Got them when Koh Gen Do wasn't available, and since it's like a lifetime supply and I'm happy, I stopped looking. There's perhaps a LITTLE bit of a taste - more like a slight lack of juice-flavor - for perhaps 3 hits after wicking. Then it seems to run pretty pure flavor for a pretty long while. I re-wick fairly often, just cuz it's easy - usually after accidentally running it a bit dry and getting a hint of a burn. When I pull the wick, it's not BURNT, but I just figure if I got there, then SOME burnt flavor might remain, so I re-wick it.

Also, if you're nasty taste is "burnt" then it could well be over-stuffed...

Also also - with the Shiseido or KGD type cotton, at least, no boiling. I get the idea, but I don't think I'd want to work with boiled cotton...

And finally - what were you using before?

Brand i dont know i bought the wire and cotton on ebay, maybe i have to much in there it seemed pretty loose, I was using 100% vg now im using 50/50 Cosmic Fogs Church, i have it at 16 watts now its not as bad but still there, maybe i will give it a break in for a bit and see what happens.

what atty?

what gauge kanthal?

please locate the package for brand information.

we need details if we're going to know what's wrong.

a pic of your coil and wick might also prove very beneficial.

I am rebuilding the OCC coil, which would be a better choise, EKOWOOL Silica Braided Wick hollow core, cotton core, silica core, or Japanese Organic Cotton (Koh Gen Do)...im using 26g, Kanger Nano

how's the 50/50 juice working out for you so far? any improvement?

personally, i'd go with rayon in a clearo. better wicking than most and more forgiving than cotton should it run a little dry.

though, i have no experience with the sub tanks.

50/50 is ok i have a allergic reaction to PG so i cant vape much of it, i usually vape 65-100% VG i went to 19 watts the taste is better so far.

Looking at your coil ... it looks like a tight coil, instead of a standard.(?)
Standard coils (space in between coils) tend to wick thicker liquids
much better; producing less, if no dry hits. For instance, running a
standard coil in the Lemo Drop, using thick Boba's Bounty liquid, there
are no dry hits, and constant wicking with organic cotton. Just a thought.
