St Patrick's Day is in a week (if you're in Europe). Pádraig, as he's known in Irish (the root for "Paddy" as opposed to "Patty") is the patron saint of Ireland. A few things you may not know: *He wasn't Irish. He was born in the early 400s in Northern England or Southern Scotland. *He wasn't actively a Christian in his early years. It took getting kidnapped by dread pirates on the Irish Sea and being sold into slavery in Ireland to get him to consider his life and become religious. *After escaping captivity in Ireland and becoming a member of the clergy, a vision lead him to return to Ireland as a missionary. He is credited as being the first bishop of Armagh *The color of St Patrick is BLUE, not GREEN. Green is a color often associated with the day, due to its association with the Catholics in Ireland. *St Patrick's Day is said to be the day of his death. It was, for the most part, a feast day similar to many others until the late 1700s/early 1800s in the United States when Irish immigrants began using it as a day to celebrate their heritage. By 1848, New York City held the largest Paddy's Day parties in the world (a claim they still have today) Legends: *He used shamrock in an illustrative parable since it was everywhere in Ireland and could illustrate the 3-in-1 theory of the Holy Trinity *He banished all snakes from Ireland using a Shillelagh (club/stick) after snakes bothered him during a fast.
