Sadly, a million wouldn't be enough for that. Depending on location, the home itself could be over a million, and then even if it comes in under, it wouldn't be by much, and a few years of property taxes........ House is gone :/

That's why so many lotto winners end up bankrupt, buying homes without factoring the yearly fees and upkeep

My lakefront cottage wouldn't be a big one, because I wouldn't want to do a lot of housework there. It would have a kitchen/dining room, a living room, bath, bedroom and sleeping loft in case we had company.

I was always considering buying a chunk of property in Detroit. Sure, it looks like hell now, but in twenty years who really knows what may be? For 1,000,000, considering some properties are selling for $500, I could buy about 2,000 homes!! The king of Detroit =)
