Install a section of PVC pipe in the ground when planting trees or large shrubs. Place the pipe 8 -12" from the root ball . The bottom of the pipe should have holes drilled around the outside up 3-4". Extend the bottom of the pipe a few inched below the bottom of the root ball. You can fill the pipe with big rocks if you don't want a "open hole" Fill the pipe with water and allow it to soak into the ground. This will force the roots to grow downward and outward toward the water source giving your tree or shrub a very good base.
