Top favorites....that's hard to say and always changing!! I also liked Life Of Pi, a lot! Would recommend too The Lonely Polygamist & The Poisonwood Bible (just recently re-read that one). I have been a fan of Stephen King for a long, long time and love many of his books. Anyone like Bentley Little? If you like really out there strange horror books you should give him a try. I love his book called The Store. I have a few V.C. Andrews series that I was recently re-reading - my favs being the flowers in the attic series, the Casteel series, and the Cutler series. One of my fav Dean Koontz books is Intensity - a must read that will be hard to put down!!

I know that Kindle users like their devices too chimchim and I think if I had it to do over, I'd get a Kindle instead. Mainly just b/c Amazon has better book prices. Still I do love the nook.

Ha! I was thinking if I had to do it over, I'd get a color Nook ~LOL!~

Krisbkream sir and Incantius sir, add me to the Potter club. The movies anger me, but do love the books.... :)

I HAVE GOT TO READ THE HARRY POTTER series! I heard they are coming out electronically. She has not allowed this series to be sold in any form other than old fashioned books. Is this true? Will they be available for our e-readers?

When the color nook came out I had to explain to a lot of people that the device works great as a tablet. If you want a cheaper alternative to an ipad, then maybe you would look into that. But for reading, you definitely want to stay with an e-ink screen. You Kindle and my non-color nook both work so great because they use e-ink technology and are not backlit. Nook color is backlit, this causes eye strain and you've got to charge the thing after 8 hours of use (they claim) which means like after 4 hours use for all practical purposes. For general reading, how often do you need color capability?

I suppose the net features and set up work good and all that, but a touch screen isnt something I want to type on and in my opinion the device is more or less worthless as a reader.

What B&N should do, and others as well, is come out with a device that switches between e-ink and the usual backlit display.

I loved"The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter. Read it many years ago and still think of it.
As for the Harry Potter books-they are certainly worth reading. I'd start in sequence if you haven't read them. They really are clever. Her imagination is incredible. You can get them for free at your local library. Lately I have been reading Christopher Moore-"Fool" and "The gospel according to Biff". Good books.

Chimchim you opened a can of worms with this thread lol. Next to vaping, reading is probably my next biggest obsession.

I couldn't pick individual books, most of what I read are series. My reading tastes seem to change every few years...lately it's been mostly Fantasy/YA/Sci-Fi. There are tons more on my list but if I had to pick my top 5 series right now it would be:

  • The Dune Series - Frank Herbert
  • The Hyperion Cantos - Dan Simmons
  • The Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins
  • The Millenium Trilogy - Stieg Larsson
  • His Dark Materials Trilogy - Philip Pullman

If any of you are on Goodreads (and if you're not you need to be  ) feel free to add me to your friends list there: DJ - The United States (236 books)

Say do any of you have the e-reader, Nook by Barnes and Noble? I ask because I've been sorta looking for someone to share the books with. There's a lend book feature for some if not all the books, but you can only do it once. It might be cool if someone else from the forum has one and would be interested in the lending with me.

jbank I'm a huge Nook fan, although I don't really use the 'lend' feature. I've found more than enough books to keep me busy for years... *cough*...bit torrents...*cough* I have about 900 books currently on my Nook and I've built up my Calibre library to around 9000 titles. Speaking of Calibre, if any of you use e-readers, Calibre is by far the best conversion/organizational software out there - calibre - E-book management It's open source and its completely free. It'll convert any e-book format to any other e-book format, so it doesn't matter what type you have or which format you download to read.

Here's a couple pics of my Nook. I plan on replacing this one soon with a Nook color though

I think the last book i was able to read was The Light Bearer, by Donna Gillespie. Tons of research went into this book and i was pleasantly surprised that i was able to give one of my cousins more info about a roman coin he found in Germany on a dig. (Also explained a lot of the dysfunction on Dad's side LOL) Hmmmm need to contact Jan to see what he learned after carbon dating etc.

Books have gotten too heavy and looking down for so many hours tends to bother my neck and shoulders, i have been considering a Kindle or a Nook... But i read 2 books a day in my Junior year in HS (new kid, small town)

They've been out in e-book format for quite some time. That was one of the first series I loaded on my Nook over a year ago.

Think that's what I heard Ms. Chimchim. My wife had a kindle, but you'll never see me with one. Prefer the feel a book... Just sounded like Giles there...

I totally agree with you! I like feel of a book, that's why I had to buy a cover! It opens and feels like a book but the only thing missing is the pages! LOL!

It's super hard to pick only five:

Traveling Mercies - Anne Lamott
Ellen Foster - Kaye Gibbons
A Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens
Les Miserables - Victor Hugo
Hamlet - Shakespeare
Little Women
Jane Eyre

Is it incongruous that I love both the Classics and Contemporary Fiction?

Ack, I can't stop! I also loved the Dark Tower series, Midwives by Chris Bojalian, A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, House of Sand and Fog by -somebody-... and then there are all those Harlequin romances I read as a teenager

Still not the same Ms. Chimchim, like the feel of paper, the smell of the book, etc... It's the same way with music, mp3's just aren't the same as having the artwork in hand, the thank you's, and are too easily obtainable... Every Emperor album took some real work to get, not to mention a lot of the other obscure bands and special edition albums in my collection (like the white boarder copy of Mercyful Fate's first lp)... Feel something has been lost from the digital age.....

Chim chim i see you have the fleur dis lis cover are you a Saints fan? ha

I do like the Saints but, alas, it's more of a religious thing for me.
Fleur-de-lis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The three petals of the heraldic design reflect a widespread association with the Holy Trinity, with the band on the bottom symbolizing Mary. The tradition says that without Mary you can not understand the Trinity since it was she who bore The Son.[32] a tradition going back to 14th century France,[11] added onto the earlier belief that they also represented faith, wisdom and chivalry."
