OT: Need modem/router advice

Hello hello! Not the right forum, obviously, but I trust the techie people here, so here goes:

Just signed up with Comcast for a tv/internet bundle. I don't want to pay them a monthly fee for some outdated junk modem, so I'm trying to find an affordable modem and router.

Any advice? We need wireless access for a few devices, and I'd like to be able to stream video. Other than that, I just want affordable and reliable.

Great tips! Newegg is definitely looking good. Hopefully last question: Am I making a huge sacrifice if I go with wireless G? I know the speed of N is higher, but I don't think my internet speed exceeds wireless G anyway. Thoughts?

I'd definitely go with the N; should be able to find one that is both G/N. I got mine at Walmart.

N is also more secure KrisBKream sir, never skimp on security... :)

Mor. This is not really correct, as A/B/G/N use the same exact security protocols.

I think all the recommends are good, Linksys/Cisco makes a good modem and router. However, you need to check with Comcast what there required specs are for the modem, not all modems you can buy are rated for all providers.

Check this list to see which ones are recommended to work with Comcast. DOCSIS Devices

Also, stay away from the Linksys valet units, they overheat way to easy. The E series are the way to go.

Hope that helps, and please feel free to PM me if you need any additional help.

Mabbo sir, all I will say is it's far easier to hack a g router than an n.... :)

    Mor sir.

Please do explain then, Give that both N and G use the exact same security protocols and same encryption methods, how one would be easier to hack then the other. In fact both are just as easy or hard depending on what protocol is used.

Given that I have been in IT and IT security for 17 plus years, I would really like to know what you know that the rest of us people that make a living in the field do not.

Well poo... Good news and news that might be bad if I understood it in the slightest

Ordered a motorola surfboard cable modem, then realized later that it uses docsis 2.0 I hope this won't be a big problem, but I have no flipping idea. Also ordered a linksys e1200 wireless-n router. Not all the bells and whistles I was hoping for, but decent enough for my budget.

Thanks for all the help! :vapor:

    PM sent Mabbo sir. :)

    Folks.

The main focus here is your wireless security. Regardless of what wireless band you use, A/B/G or N you must make sure that you secure it. There are a set of security protocols that can be confirgured in every wireless router or AP.

Your secruity comes from the use of these protocols and not by what band you are broadcasting on.
