Ahhh, anachronisms.

I managed to get all the crops in fine last year, and now I'll be using less whale-blubber in my lamps. That's a good thing, right?

[shaking head]

Ben Franklin called from the grave to remind us this is 2011...

Heck, around my house, even resetting the clocks in an anachronism. I don't have anything anymore that doesn't take care of itself, except my super-expensive dress watch.

Do you live in an empty house with nothing but a computer, cell phone and Thor!
I have to reset the stove, the microwave, the coffee pot, the alarm clocks, the wall clocks and the vehicles. None of those things are connected to a network.

If you could only see my house. Errr - good thing you can't.

That said: Not everything has to be connected to a network. It's not like the WWV time signal hasn't been broadcast for, what, 65+ years with a modern accuracy of 1 part in 1013 error from an atomic source?

The stove and microwave listen to that standard time radio signal. The 'fridge is on-net (wifi), and has Fort Collins as its time source too (the same place the radio broadcasts come from).
The windows machines have microsoft as their time source. My unix machines use my servers in the datacenter which have a GPS source, with Fort Collins as a backup. My every-day watch sets its time from the radio source at 3am every night. Television is on-net, as is the DVR, PVR, streaming player, bluray player, Roku, etc. Oh, the LaCrosse weather station sets its time from the WWV signal too.

The analog clock I have in the lab is fun to watch during a time change in the fall, because the motor can't run backwards. It uses the radio signal from WWV and swings the hands really fast through all 23 hours to get back on time.

Any clock listed as an "atomic clock" is getting its time from that radio signal.

Just my Tag Heuer that doesn't set itself these days.

Here's Ben's original essay on the idea: Full text - Benjamin Franklin - The Journal of Paris, 1784

And then Willett's take on it that lead to the whole mess: Full text - Daylight Saving Time - William Willett's pamphlet

Some studies (notably Indiana) conclude that it saves 1% energy costs. Other studies argue there is a net 3% loss rather than savings.

Pedestrians are around six times as likely to die in the fall right after the time change. That could probably be viewed as a positive step in population control, so it's not all bad news. ;)
