There's a connection! For many years they lied to us about weight gain connected to smoking cessation. First it was, "You'll only gain 5 pounds. Smoking is much more unhealthy than an extra 5 pounds." Then it was 5 kilograms. Then another study found that many people gained as much as 20-30 pounds.

I gained 30 pounds when I achieved nicotine abstinence about 20 years ago. I was a mess, both in terms of mood and in being confused, forgetful, and inattentive. They put me on a tricyclic antidepressant that gave me intense cravings for anything sweet. I guess that's the mechanism by which it works to lift your mood. During the 2 weeks I took that medication, I gained 5 pounds a week. This, despite the fact that it elevated my resting heart rate to about 100 bpm. They said "exercise!" I said, "I'm afraid to!"

Look up the MRFIT (Multiple Risk Factors Intervention Trial) study. They took people who were prediabetic and did interventions for weight loss / weight control and smoking cessation. Their intervention worked fine on non-smokers and on the smokers who didn't quit. Those who quit smoking gained a lot of weight, developed hypertension, and developed diabetes at a much faster rate than the other groups.
