This has me baffled, please if anyone knows what might be causing this could you advise.

I have a Janty Kissbox classic that I use with manual switches and USB cable with inline battery.

Everything was working fine up to a couple of days ago but I noticed then that batteries were running down even when the USB connector was plugged in. The batteries in the USB cable were gettiing hot also.

I thought it might be to do with the connection to the computer so disconnected and used a separate charger to recharge the batteries but they still got hot and ran down quickly.

I tried changing the USB cable to a new one but the same thing happened whether connected to the USB socket or not. Hot batteries that ran down quickly.

I tried using a different switch - the same thing happened with the new switch.

I tried using an ordinary battery and it got very hot and hard to hold even when the switch wasn't being pressed.

The only thing I haven't tried (and will try now) is a new atomiser.

This really has me stumped, I don't understand how this could be happening. Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks.

Changing to a new atomiser has solved the problem, same old switch, same old USB cable and the batteries are lasting fine and not heating up.

I guess this thread is a waste of space now unless anyone can suggest why an atomiser would cause this problem in the first place? Do you think there's a way to save the atomiser that was causing the problem or should I just write it off?

Resistance always causes heat as we often find in the forum posts. I use the same setup you've referred to and suspect imminent atomiser failure when the inline battery heats up. At first I thought it was a short in the fine wiring of the usb or rechargable battery failure. Then the attomiser finally went cold. It was a beci atomiser by the way that I had abused for quite some time. Glad you're back up to vaping. Cheers!

Kate, sounds like you have a carbon buildup on the coil or short in coil causing bleed off to ground or nag. side of coil. ( decrease in resistance of the coil )
Result= hot battery and shortened life of charge.

If it's carbon buildup, possibly could clean it but doubtful without using some extreme measures that are being tried but not completely tested and we don't fully understand the consequences yet. ( ice machine cleaner ) probably would just be better replace atty, not that expensive.

If it's a short due to material breakdown of coil.(its non-repairable)

Thanks for your ideas both. I think I'll get a replacement atomiser and not use that one again.

I'm not understanding how a faulty atomiser could bypass the switch and activate the battery. Unless that's not what's happened

Glad it's sorted - couldn't help thinking of a LolCat saying "I haz ded atomices..."
Lordy, I never saw a LolCat before coming into this forum...and now they have a grip on the imagination...

Maybe the shorted atomizer causing excess heat, caused the switch to stick for a period of time.
Glad problem is solved.

Kate, I had an attys do about the same. I think it short out a new battery or something. Every battery I put it on wanted to heat on it's own and a puff of smoke came of of the new battery when I took it off. All my battery's are auto. I am not letting it near my USB PT.

PS. I have had battery's do the same thing.

Glad I found this thread, cos it's happening with my SD. Put a new 901 atomiser on t'other day and it all went pear.

The atty gets too hot to touch, although the coil isn't visibly red hot (one of the funky things about the SD is you can see the coil if you take the cart off).

Every now and then it spits a glob of molten plasma into my mouth. (Could live with that but just lately the whole unit is getting hot, even the battery, and that's about as far as I go on this one).

I'm hoping it's just this particular att, and not the batch (matt white DSE901s, first time I've used them).

I'll try another one, and update on how it turns out.

It was the atomiser. Swapped out and all is now well.

Just my thoughts here, but I think the at was wired (or assembled) wrong, so that the heat transfers to the wall of the at, rather than into the pot. What bears this out is three or four scorch marks on the shell (wouldn't have noticed if it was a black or silver model)

@ Kate:

I am a huge R/C enthusiast, and have run lithium ion batteries in every vehicle imaginable.
If I run a battery and it gets hot (not warm) I immediately dispose of it.
A li-ion battery that gets hot has been ruined.
Chances are it has been run down below nominal voltage.
If you charge them again, the battery will probably swell and could vent or explode.
This would cause a house fire, and nobody wants anyone to get hurt or killed.
Some of you will disagree with this, saying that I have extremist views.
But I did have a house fire (got put out) by charging a battery that had gotten hot during use.
When in doubt, throw it out!
How can an $8.00 battery be more important than your health and wellbeing?
I may be wrong, but those batteries cannot hurt you if they're out of the house...
Just looking out-

Happy (and healthy) Vaping!

Hi Kate

Yup - they're incoming. Hope they get here tomorrow as I'm away for a week on Friday. I've been dusting off my stash just in case (coupla blings, coupla disposable Ruyans, my Classic and Yentl KBs and my Sedansa Nano). A body could go crazy, y'know? All that stuff normally just gathers dust in a drawer when my SD is working (I also use generic pens on a daily basis).

Hi Fauxpuff

I'm pretty sure the battery got hot because of the faulty atomiser - the SD is all metal and the whole thing got hot. The atomiser couldn't be touched, but the outer shell and battery were what I'd call hand hot - sorta like a mug of tea that's been standing for ten minutes. I didn't change the battery when I swapped out the atty and the unit vaped well without overheating (the atty was OK to touch as well).

Thanks for the advice

One of my batteries would not charge. I tried the charger that came with the kit and then I tried the usb charger. Before sending it back to the supplier I tried it again and the battery started smoking and some black stuff came out of the tip. Yikes. I can imagine that would start a fire if no one was around when the thing went kaboom. Makes me afraid of charging batteries overnight.

NEVER CHARGE LITHIUM CELLS UNATTENDED ESPECIALLY WHILE YOU SLEEP

bad bad bad idea......
