You have several grades of the Henckles...the ones that are mass produced in china and then the Pros that are produced in Germany....The Wusthoffs Classics Wusthof Classic Chef's Knife, 8-inch | cutleryandmore.com I got are made in Germany and it shows! I did have some China Henckles several years ago and they did not hold an edge well and also got spoty with rust even with hand washing......which you should never put a good knife in the dishwasher!

Well, I ordered the one I linked. If nothing else, it's a gateway into quality. My hope is that they live up to the reviews. I am worried about them not being forged. On the other hand, tech changes, they may be awesome.

Turbocad-love the "minivan" :) I never knew what to refer to that benz and it's little brother as. I am not sure minivan is the right term, especially one that moves as well as I bet yours does.

ha, yeah, no one wants to admit it's just a minivan, least of all mercedes themselves. they actually attempted to market it as a "new class of vehicle" calling it a grand tourer or something like that. there rationale is it's not a minivan because it doesn't have sliding doors and a few other points of which I don't even remember. they actually try to claim that it's an entirely new class of vehicle because it has a funky but pretty cool seating arrangement of 2+2+2 with the third row folding flat and disappearing, leaving a 2+2 seating arrangement. but lets be real here, it's a minivan more than it is anything else.

these things didn't sell well at all for mercedes. they introduced it in 06 with 2 models, the R500 and the R350 6 cyl. the first year they sold very few 500's, even less the second year so after year 2 years they discontinued the R500 completely, added a deisel model and started dropping available options trying to lower the price point and follow what they thought the market wanted but they still just never became popular. many people don't even know much about what an r class even is and they have now discontinued sales in the us completely because they just don't sell well for them at all.

because of this general undesirability or unpopularity, the market is real soft on them, so you can really pick one up cheap compared to it's much more popular ML and GL counterparts, all built on the same platform and all built right here in the usa in Georgia , and there actually an awesome vehicle, if you happen to like minivans that is :) especially the few R500's out there which are pretty rare.

actually, in 07, second year of production, amg decided to make an R model, they built something called the R63. same basic truck but they stuffed a 6.3l 500+hp drivetrain in the sucker, and of course the much needed bigger brakes went on the amg version. now THAT thing is really a beast, but, they only made something like 63 of them for the us market and maybe another 50 or so worldwide. it's the rarest of all the amg's, they say you have a better chance of seeing a Bugatti veyron than you do of actually seeing an r63 in person, but funny thing is that a friend of mine bought an R63 back in 07 and from the first time I saw it I was just floored... what a machine that was! now the funny part is, the r63 cost him a little over 100K in 07, he kept it for a little over 2 years, then went to trade it in and mercedes said they have no idea what the trade in value should even be because they base trade in values on average auction sales but there were so few that none actually passed the auction block at that point, so they winded up offering him like 5% over what an r500 would be. he winded up trading it in for like 53k. imagine spending 50k to drive a car fore 2 years?? now that's just crazy. another funny thing is, this guy used to bring his r63 out to englishtown and it ran high 12's bone stock... and this is a 5,000lb.+ truck... what a machine that thing is

I bought an Excalibur last fall off of craiglist. It a 5 tray model and not the top of the line but its great. I paid $80 for it and it was mint. I dried garlic, tomatoes, onions, carrots and made some jerky too. I also played around with applesauce and got some nice rollups with that. Its just a nice machine and its USA made. I've used it to proof bread dough too.
Heres a tray of carrots ready to go in. I fit around 8 or 9 pounds of carrots in a 1 quart bag. :)

THis is the one I have: http://www.excaliburdehydrator.com/dehydrators/5-tray/5-tray-small-excalibur-3500-black

Other than jerky I am new to this but eager to learn, swmbo showed up with a boatload of bananas today for me to use on our virgin run.
What you do with those carrots? Eat em as chips? Reconstitute later for soups and such? So much to learn.

Of the "things" in my life, this is the one that makes me most happy.

I've allot of other smaller less valuable things in it and I rarely go for inexpensive over quality.

This week has been fun...
Having carpet removed and hardwood added to family room and stairs / upstairs corridor.

The noise has stopped but now that poly application is underway we have to sleep at my wife's parents house for the next 2 nights. :)

But I should say that I won't really "own" it for another 22 years. :)

Carrots are used reconstituted. They can be used in stews etc or reconstituted and cooked just as a side dish of carrots. Apples are good as a snack. Just pop them in your mouth. Same with bananas.

ha, I didn't list my house because the bank owns more of it than I do

since I'm here and my wagon is already out there I forgot one other 'best of" thing I had to add to it. I installed the latest greatest telematics/navigation in it by way of installing a nexus 7 tablet in the dash :)

I also see a few high end audio things here. I too am a big fan of high end audio, but, for me it's high end audio in the car rather than the house :) I used to build iasca competition systems back in the day. I've got a really nice collection of high end audio I've collected over the years. several alpine high end head units and processors, several of the original rockford fosgate power 650's and a power 1,000, a bunch of original precision power ppi art series amps and a collection of illusion audio carbon fiber neodymium drivers ranging from 8" to 15" and 3 sets of illusion audio ch-1 HLCD horns(<--really the best of the best) and several mcintosh amps, the blue glass ones with the meters on the face.

I got a lot of other car stuff but don't want to overdue my presence here so just stuck to the daily driver :)

oh, and then just one other thing to share here and that's one of my mountain bikes. titus Ti custom titanium frame, chris king headset, all xtr gear train and best of everything component wise down to the last nut and bolt. that titus Ti was probably my biggest single "spurge" ever. nobody ever really needs a $6k mountain bike :( ...ahh to be young and stupid :p

ok ok , just one more, another big splurge for hobby personal use and that's my miller dynasty 200dx tig welder... really the cadillac of portable tig welders, I love that thing and hopefully will have it for life :) ok I'm done now

I am a "hobbyist" guitar player and have played for over 35 years. I learned long ago that a "Cheap" guitar will never give me the satisfaction, tone, feel and playability of a "Good" guitar. My collection appears out of hand to some, but each guitar is quality made (except for the wall hangers which are just cool to look at) and each has a certain tone that works for a variety of different music styles that I like to play. The acoustic guitars include a 1993 built Taylor 612C (my first good guitar), a 1964 Gibson LG1 and a 2005 Gibson Advanced Jumbo. My gigging electric guitars include a 2000 Gibson Smartwood Exotic, an early 80's ESP Japanese style Strat and my favorite a 2007 Made in Japan Epiphone Elitist copy of the 1963 Gibson ES335 dot. Each of these are relatively expensive but extremely well built instrument.

That is why after only 6 months of Vaping, I jumped on the Provari wagon. I wanted a well built mod that performs it's function flawlessly and feels as good as it looks. Just like my guitars, quality is easy to spot as soon as it gets used for the purpose it was made for.

I don't need a stable of mods for my vaping pleasure because I only vape one way (all day!) I do however play many styles of music and I have a guitar for each type! :D

Cool thread, lots of great stuff! One of my favorite things is the SVS subwoofer I bought some years back. I remember when it arrived, Mrs. Pianoguy said, "You're not bringing that in the house, are you?" But she soon came to love it, especially when watching football games.

An Omega Constellation I got for graduation, strictly for dressing up, I hate wearing jewelry.

My 04' Cadillac Escalade, drives like a boat, but we have a history together, so she's gonna be with me until one of us can't drive no more.
