A classic pass-though has no built-in battery, it will "pass through" the 5V voltage from a USB power supply directly to the atomizer/carto connector. You use them with a dedicated 2A USB power supply, either an AC one (plugs into a normal socket) or a cig lighter adapter in a car.

There are also some sit-and-go "pass throughs". Personally I don't consider them real PT, since you are actually vaping the battery voltage (normally 3.3 - 3.7V). They have a battery in them, with built-in charger.

A real, "dumb", PT lets you try high voltage vaping cheaply (about $25 total for a PT and a 2A USB power supply). With a 2A power supply you can use down to 2.5 ohm atomizers/cartomizers (don't try lower resistance, or you are exceeding the power supply spec).

If it is a sit-and-go passthrough, the kind with a battery, that is probably OK, but if you have a simple passthrough that is really discouraged. The USB spec only calls for a 500 mA (0.5A) drive capacity on a USB port.

Even with a sit-and-go, it would kind of bite to have something go wrong and take out the computer (yes, it has happened to people). A $10 2A USB plug-in power supply failure going bad due to a problem is a lot nicer than anything going wrong on a computer.

Agreed. You can pick up a dedicated USB dock at many retailers. :)
