Hi there!
I just upgraded to a 510. When I ordered, they had a battery passthrough available, so I got that too (+ a wall wart so I don't have to use it actually on my computer's USB port).

My question: what exactly is the differance between just a regular passthrough & a battery passthrough? Well, I mean besides the fact that the batthery PT comes with a blue rechargeable battery? LOL

Maybe a better way of wording that, is why do some PTs come with a rechargeable battery pack on it, while others are just a cord from the PT to the USB plug in??

With a battery passthrough, in my experience, the in-line battery supplies power to your atomizer. That battery is likely a similar volatage to regualr screw-in battery - @ 4.0volts. A passthrough with no in-line battery should supply voltage to your atomizer equivelant to the voltage coming out of a USB port. If you have a perfect USB port, you would be receiving around 5V or power.

To take this a step further, if you do not have one of those passthroughs with and automatice cut-off and have one with a manual switch, you can really heat up the atomizer nicely to create a super decent throat hit.

So, would you say that it is better to have a battery passthrough, since it basically regulates how much power is coming down to the atty & the chance of something like a surge won't over load it & kill everything?

Also:
1) with the battery passthrough, should I have let the battery charge up for an amount of time before using it? <gulp! plz say no plz say no> lol
2) How do I know if my passthrough has an automatic cut-off?

FYI - My 510 has a manual batteries;
The passthrough battery states: ICR10440 360 mAH

I have both types of passthroughs and the battery inline passthrough definitely needs to be charged before using. One without the battery works as soon as you plug it in. I thought my battery inline unit was doa because I couldn't use it right away. I left it charging for a while and came back to it and works like a charm. So the battery unit, bad - needs to be charged prior to vaping, good - you can unplug and take it with you.

OH NO!!!
How long should it have been charging up intially before I started using it???

More importantly, by my using it without a proper initial charging up, have I really messed up & I should be contacting my local exotic battery shop for a new one??

I have noticed that if it sits for a while, the plumes started getting bigger and it slowly decreased, so thanks for answering that question! LOL

If the battery in your passthrough is dead or below some lower threshold voltage, you will not get any vapor. No foul, really, it just won't work. When the battery is charged and supplying power to your atomizer, the USB connection is supplying power to charge the battery. The handy feature of the PT with in-line battery is you can unplug it, move around and keep vaping.
