After years of vaping, I finally made to move to purchase my first GG item...the Penelope. I've been using genesis-style RBAs for a while now, but this is the first silica based RBA that I've had. Obviously, the great GG reputation is the main reason why I went the the Penny. I got her set up pretty quickly, and the only mishap that I had was that I left the juice control open when filling. About half the tank leaked out before I realized why it happened so I'm pretty sure that I won't ever make that mistake again. I have a few questions that I'm hoping the GG vets can answer for me.

- How many turns do you recommend for the juice control opening? I have a few Kir Fanis clear tanks on the way, but until those arrive I don't have a clue on how many turns the opening should be. I'm getting a lot of dry hits, and I'm somewhat hesitant to keep opening up the juice control. I'm at 2 1/2 turns at the moment. My juices are usually around 60-70% VG.

- Is there a certain type of silica wick that wicks better than others? Is there a silica wick that doesn't have that "silica" taste (or doesn't take that long to break in)? The taste of silica is part of the reason why I've shied away from silica based RBAs

So far, I'm really enjoying the Penelope, and it makes me wonder why I stayed away for so long! Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

You gotta open it up more than that. Don't be shy, just take it slow. Tiny partial turns until it's working well. I usually run mine full open, and that's only using 75PG/25VG flavorless 5mg liquid. It will only leak out like that if you leave it open while filling, this won't happen if you set it up properly and keep it closed while filling. Don't move it at all until you're filled up and the cap is firmly in place. THEN you can start opening it. You most likely WON'T have to have it wide open, it's just the way I like it, I like nice wet hits, and I don't open it all the way straight off the bat, I work my way up to it. Give it a few more turns if it's harsh or the flavor isn't there.

Buy the 3.5mm silica from CoV, it's great and give it a nice torching before use (it won't burn, contrary to what common sense may tell you when you go to do this). The old "silica tastes bad" thing is a very outdated myth. IMHO, good quality silica has the purest taste out there. Sure I love genesis' and I owned a DID, DID clone, Cobra and a BliSS before I had a house fire but my Penelope was what got used 90% of the time.

There are other great silicas out there, but the CoV is the standard and works great though.

1 This is going to depend on your juice and how frequently you vape. The more wick you have exposed the faster it will wick. Thicker juices will likely need more wick exposed. Just be carefull to not accidentally unscrew the mouthpiece completely. I tent to have mine open 4-6 turns.

2 I tend to use the wick that COV sells. Some people like to burn their wick to get rid of the taste. I don't burn mine and find the taste normally goes away within half an hour. As for size I think I like the 3mm wick slightly more then the 3.5 or the 3.5 with 2 strands removed.

Thanks guys. I got the Penny in the classies, and the seller included a bunch of 3.5mm silica, pre-made wires, and R/NR wire. I'm pretty sure that it's all from CoV. I opened her up to 4 turns and vaped about half a tank already. The taste seems to be getting better so I'll keep at it for another day before rebuilding. I'll try out the 3.5 with a couple strands removed to see if that helps any. I've read a little about what some are using as alternatives to silica (i.e. bamboo and cotton wicks). I'm still new to non-gen RBAs so I'm curious what you guys think about those. Are they worth trying out and will they improve on wicking/flavor?
