PG in Anti-Freeze

I keep seeing people say that PG is in Anti-Freeze, this makes me so mad!

PG comes in several grades, Industrial grade is used in Anti-Freeze. And PG was only added to anti-freeze to replace Ethylene Glycol that was a problem because dogs often lap up puddles of anti-freeze.

Pharmaceutical grade This is a much less concentrated form of PG and is commonly used as a solvent in oral, topical and injectable drug products as well as in foods.

The FDA includes Pharmaceutical grade PG on its Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) list and The World Health Organization also considers it as safe for use.

When you hear people say that, tell them that water is the major component in antifreeze. That includes non 'pet safe' anutfreeze that contains ethylene glycol which is toxic to humans and animals whereas propylene glycol is not. If you see it in print, comment with the facts to expose the ignorance of the author.

Yeah, that antifreeze argument drive me nuts. My own brother was trying to tell me that I don't know what's in them, there's antifreeze in those blahblahblah. I told him I make my own and know exactly what's in it and he just lit another cig. If I can't convince family (who are quite reasonable mostly) then I just don't know.

What I am sick of is people changing definitions because the truth makes them uncomfortable. I have said before we shouldn't run from the truth. We should educate that just because it is anti-freeze doesn't mean it is toxic.

When people hear anti-freeze they usually think of the stuff you put in your car's radiator (actually called radiator fluid). That primary purpose of that fluid is cooling the engine. It doesn't do that if it turns to steam. So chemicals are added to increase the boiling temperature. This also can raise the freezing point. If it is ice there is no flow of the fluid. Something needs to be added to keep the radiator fluid from freezing. What is added is the actual anti-freeze. So yes, PG is nontoxic anti-freeze when used for this purpose.

As stated more than once on this board, many things can be used as anti-freeze which people consume and even a naturally occurring fluid in our bodies. Just because it is anti-freeze doesn't mean it is toxic as people initially think.

Oh yeah, lots of things can work as "anti-freeze." salt, for instance. When you add that to water it increases the boiling point and lowers the freezing point. But, we don't use it in engines because that would cause corrosion. One application is not necessarily related to another, and just because two chemicals can share the same use doesn't mean they are both toxic or nontoxic. I mean, think about paint. You sure as hell wouldn't want to use the stuff famous painters died of in the old days, like paris green. But, we let children play with crayola finger paint all the time. People need to use their noggin more often.
