PGA = Pure Grain Alcohol

Some states don't allow their liquor stores to carry it either, so don't go in expecting that they'll have it... Most folks think vodka is effective. But I *hate* the rotten potato flavor of vodka. Me? I just use water a drop at a time until i get the right consistency. Mmmm universal solvent.

And now I'm craving a hand grenade.

I have used both vodka, distilled water, and pga. PGA is by far the most effective, but only due to the fact that it is, more or less, straight alcohol. When I clean my atties I run hot water through them for a while, blow em out, repeat a couple times, and soak it in a tiny bit of pga for a bit. Only plus side to this is the fact that pga dries out ridiculously quick, and I would think it removes whatever gunk would be left over. Vodka works as well... I just like using a bit of alcohol to remove the water. As for thinning juice, I'd use distilled water. It's cheap, and adds no flavor at all. PGA and vodka seem to give a bit of a sweet taste for some reason.

When I used to service computer room tape drives, we were allowed to purchase a bottle of Everclear for cleaning tape heads and put it on our expense reports! It's definitely a good, clean solvent that doesn't leave residue. It so pure that when you open the bottle, it absorbs a tiny amount of water from ambient humidity in the air, so keep it capped. it's almost impossible to have alcohol that doesn't contain a tiny amount of water, but PGA is the closest.

Don't use rubbing alcohol. It's not pure and contains lots of water. It's also poisonous if consumed.
