Howdy Folks,

Ive seen bits and pieces on the forum about this but haven't found the thread (that Im sure is out there) about how to resolve the horrible burnt taste that comes from some Pheonix atomizers.

Ive been a boge carto tank vaper for quite a while, but when they became unreliable, I started looking into options again..one of which has been the Pheonix.

I gotta say... I have yet to take an enjoyable vape off that thing. Its a bumber because I know it has potential.

Ive read that sometimes the manufacture sends out the atty with the kanthal wrapped too tight, thus not allowing enough juice to wick in and around the coil. I also read that there is a break in period, but honestly, the taste is so bad I cant vape it long enough to "break it in"

I took a shot at wrapping my own coil... I am new at this. It wasn't the prettiest coil Ive ever seen but my provari didnt fire off any errors and the coil did glow so I figured I was good. I wrapped the coil around the wick somewhat loose as to allow as much juice in as possible. The results were sub-par. Less vapor than the manufacturers coil and the same rancid taste.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

*** on a side note, the silica wick I was using just began falling apart into little bits when I was stuffing it into the drip cup. I started to feel unsafe vaping with those little particles in there.. Im gonna go for some cotton, but does anyone have some thoughts on that issue too?

Thanks, Mike

Vivi Nova questions in the next thread.. Hahahaha!

I'll tell you how I do them and my Pheonix clones are some of my best vaping attys. I use 3.5mm silica wick from COV and 32g K-A1. I wrap the coil 4/5 wraps and end with legs pointing same direction so I can have the coil on one side of the posts not at an angle going between them. I have the wick long enough on each end to go back around the posts and into the well. They only need to be long enough to touch the bottom. I hit my wick and wire with a torch before making the coil, it helps get rid of the metallic taste a new setup has. Final tip has to do with getting the air hole lined up with the coil, I use an oring from a drip tip on the base. If you don't have one it won't line up when the threads get tight. The easiest way to get it on is have your atty put together with a drip tip on it. Roll the oring over the dt then down over the body of the atty. once it's down near the base unscrew the body enough from the base and roll in the rest of the way down. Now remove your drip tip and look inside and line the air hole up on the side with your coil. This will get you much better results. Also I made my air hole just a hair bigger it was tight than I like. Also I arch the coil up just a bit rainbowlike so I get better airflow around it. If you don't have a torch fire your coil for a while with the new dry wick, make sure everything glows even. After about 4-5 good hot burns its ready for juice and vaping. Most of the "new taste" will be gone and it will break in pretty quickly. Your wick shouldn't crumble, I dry burn mine about every other day and use them for a week or two before replacing. That is with Boba's, if I use a clearer juice I can go a long time before they need a dry burn. I used to just replace them, but they get tasting better and better after each burn. Lotta info there and it probably sounds complicated but once you get to messing with it it'll become second nature. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

Unloaded,
Thanks for all the tips. I gave it a go and Success! I think a big factor was the O-ring. I have the wire going into the posts on the same side and didn't wrap the coil too tight. I dont have a torch, but didn't need it.. the flavor was there and no more harsh taste from the get go. The only change I made was that I used 100% cotton yarn rather than silica because I was having all the issues with it falling apart.
Thanks again!

What did you use to make the air hole bigger? I was going to go look for a small drill bit or something and wondered if there was a specific size to get. I have read to always go a little bit at a time, because once you do it, you can't go back.
