I was just curious if any members out there have received emails that appear to be from ECF.

What I mean is, I have my PM messages tied to my email so when I get one it notifies me immediately. They all appear in the same way but recently I have gotten some with a name and ECF following it. Example John@ecf-cigarette-forum.com where normally they dont have the name followed by @.

It appears these are another way for Phishing and possible scams to aquire info from you. Just throwing this out there so people are aware and no one divulges pertinent information or anything if not aware of this.

Yeah I have received 2 of them in the past couple weeks and one of them got sent to Misty as it seemed to be the same thing of a Chinese Company looking to sell nicotine. I received another one tonight and actually got a little snooty in my reply as they asked for Paypal address so they could place a order. I did get e response back and tried to sound apologetic to them by telling them to send a pm to me on the forum but never got one. I tend to play with Phishers and things and lead and egg them on, I figure if they want to play with me I might as well get some fun out of it also, but am still really curious as to how they got my email address.

Hey 5Card how you been?

Yeah I know about that Elendil and thanks for the info for people who dont. I know it wasnt from any staff member from the forum and even looked up the name on the forum knowing it wouldnt be there. It had a second backing email address as well. You can spot a fake and I just wanted to give a heads up to everyone on here about it. Also the spelling gives it away, LOL it was pretty atrocious.

I usually don't like to bump older threads, but since this one went unanswered, I'll clear this up.

If you have it set up in your UserCP to accept email from members, then they can click on your name and select "Send email to (your name)". The email will come from ECF, as the member is not given your email address. The email sent will come from (their name) @ e-cigarette-forum.com.

In short, it's nothing to worry about. Sometimes spammers will join the forum and try to shoot PMs and emails to members with their spam advertising. New members must now have 5 posts before they can use the PM or email function, so this gives us a better chance to catch and ban them before they can become a nuisance.

I really wouldn't say it's nothing to worry about. I could just be spam but it also might be phishing were they ask for a password or some type of information that will allow them access to your bank or credit cards.

A common PayPal/e-bay scam nailed hundreds of thousands of people. They would send what looked like an official request for information so that a transaction could be completed. Well it would be completed for sure, just as soon as your bank account was wiped out. Also, don't forget that there are still hackers that love to send you a bug so they can use your broadband as a zombie bott. When you open the e-mail you get an embedded file that is basically a ghost in your machine.

Better safe than sorry, don't open e-mails at all unless you know who they are coming from.

ECF staff will never ask you for your password. We have no reason to. We have no access to your passwords at all, we can only reset them should you have an issue.

Should the thought of the possibility of someone trying to scam you is something of concern, I suggest going to your UserCP and turning off the option to allow members to email you. I believe this is the default setting.

(theirname)@e-cigarette-forum.com is exactly how it came in when I got them and was the reason I posted this. They use backer addresses to make it look as if it is a real message from the forum. I just want people to be aware that there not all legit and can be Phishing emails. It wasnt even a password they were looking. Point of it all is to just be careful and not assume all of them are legit.

One if they utilized the link in your profile "contact member via email" they don't have your email address.... So for a safety precaution should you decide to reply to that member.. rather than clicking reply on your email page... log on to ECF and reply to that member via PM ( (theirname) should be their screenname here on ECF) this way you will still keep your information private.... (of course don't send any thing via PM that you don't want anyone to know)

The first thing I did was log into ECF and seen there was no PM in there from that member, I then searched for them not finding anything. PM messages cant be replied to from the email you have to log into the forum for it.

PM me the senders email address and I will take a look into it... but usually when
one clicks to contact you via email... there will be no record of it in your inbox.

It was done from the forum the got the info from the forum and then made the email from that outside it. Ive deleted it a while ago but sent it off to a few on the forum and the email has since vanished. Misty had a copy of it at one point as well. I did some pinging and stuff from the ip in the header and checked and it came originally from overseas.

I have my edit options set up to receive e-mail from Administrators only. It's not that I'm anti-social, I just want to avoid spam etc. If a member wants to send me a message they can PM me. If it's a member that I know, I can always PM them my e-mail address.

Just a suggestion to management, perhaps that should be the default setting ??
